- Beit Yaacov/Rabi Meyr Synagogue - The Jewish Committee of Amazonas was established on June 15, 1929, by which time the first local synagogue, Beit Yaacov, had already been operating since 1925. Subsequently, the Rabi Meyr Synagogue was founded in 1937. These two synagogues merged into one large, new temple in January 1962, which has since been a source of pride for the Jewish community in Amazonas. It serves as the main venue for religious gatherings, with full services on Saturdays, all other religious holidays, and weekly Shachrit on Thursdays. It’s a source of wonder for visitors to our city to discover, in the heart of the jungle, descendants of a rich history that only steadfastness and love for God and the Amazon could preserve.

Amazonian Jews (Hebrew: יהודי אמזונאס, “Yehudei Amazonas”; Spanish: judíos amazónicos; Portuguese: judeus amazônicos) refers to the mixed-race descendants of Jewish Moroccan and indigenous ancestry residing in the Amazon basin cities and river villages of Brazil and Peru. These locations include Belém, Santarém, Alenquer, Óbidos, and Manaus in Brazil, as well as Iquitos in Peru. The Jewish Moroccan men married indigenous women, resulting in mestizo descendants. In the 21st century, Belém is home to approximately 1000 Jewish families, while Manaus has around 140 families, most of whom are descendants of these 19th-century Moroccan Jews.
