It was part of a larger research institution known as the Mouseion, dedicated to the Muses, the nine goddesses of the arts.[10] The concept of a universal library in Alexandria might have been suggested by Demetrius of Phalerum, an exiled Athenian statesman residing in Alexandria, to Ptolemy I Soter, who possibly initiated plans for the Library. However, the Library itself was likely constructed during the reign of his son, Ptolemy II Philadelphus.
