Highlights
  • Cathedral of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception - The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception is a Roman Catholic cathedral located in downtown Maputo. The Cathedral features Gothic-inspired ornaments, with the cross of the Portuguese caravels from the 15th century being particularly notable.
  • Maputo City Hall - Maputo City Hall, also known as the Municipal Council Building of Maputo, serves as the seat of the local government for Mozambique’s capital. This neoclassical building is situated at the head of Independence Square.
  • Praca da Independencia - Independence Square is a central public square in Maputo, Mozambique. Originally built by the Portuguese as Mouzinho de Albuquerque Square, it featured a statue of Mouzinho de Albuquerque, the former governor-general of Portuguese Mozambique, which was inaugurated in 1940. Following Mozambique’s independence in 1975, the square was renamed Praça da Independência, and the statue was replaced by one of Samora Machel, the first president of Mozambique.
  • CCFM - Centro Cultural Franco-Mocambicano - Opened in 1995 on the ruins of the old Hotel Clube built in 1898, the French-Mozambican Cultural Center (CCFM) is one of the most beautiful buildings in the French cultural network abroad. It features an emblematic style of iron architecture from the Victorian era, making it a standout among Mozambique’s cultural and architectural heritage sites.
  • Casa de Ferro (The Iron House) - Prefabricated in Belgium, the Iron House is a building imported from Belgium in 1892 and is one of Gustave Eiffel’s projects.
  • Tunduru Botanical Gardens - Located in the center of Maputo, the botanical garden was renamed in honor of the Tanzanian region of Tunduru, home to many freedom fighters against Portuguese colonialists. Before Mozambique’s independence, it was known as the Vasco da Gama Garden. In 1924, on the 400th anniversary of Vasco da Gama’s death, the old gate was replaced with a new one in the Manueline style.
  • Mercado Central de Maputo - Maputo Municipal Market, designed by David de Carvalho, was built with iron elements imported from Belgium and inaugurated in 1901. The market offers a variety of goods, including food, fruits, vegetables, spices, household items, personal use products, and souvenirs.
  • Maputo Central Train Station - Maputo Railway Station is a stunning building that serves as the main train station in Maputo, the capital of Mozambique. Known for its architectural beauty, the station features marble pillars, wrought iron work, and a massive central dome, earning it a place among the world’s most beautiful train stations.
  • Fortress of Maputo - The original structure on this site was a fortified trading post built by the Dutch from Cape Town, located about a quarter of a mile from the mouth of the Espírito Santo River. The expedition, led by Klaas Nieuhof, consisted of 113 men in two ships, the Gouda and the Caap, and arrived in Maputo Bay in early April 1721. After receiving permission from the local chief, they began constructing a wooden fort named Fort Lijdzaamheid. Despite reinforcements, many Europeans perished due to malaria.
  • FEIMA - Feira de Artesanato, Flores e Gastronomica - A great place to buy souvenirs and enjoy food and drinks.
  • Museu De Historia Natural de Maputo - Founded in 1911 and housed since 1933 in a beautiful building inspired by the Manueline style, the Natural History Museum is one of the most visited places in Maputo by both locals and tourists. Initially called the Provincial Museum and later the Dr. Álvaro de Castro Museum, it became the Natural History Museum after Mozambique’s independence.
