Chasing Waterfalls and Waves: A Caribbean Adventure
When the allure of a waterfall hike along Trinidad’s North Coast called, I couldn’t resist. With promises of scenic drives, rainforest trails, and a refreshing swim, I was eager to dive into this adventure and share the experience with you.
The Journey Begins: A Scenic Drive to Remember
The day started with a two-hour drive along the North Coast, a route that never fails to captivate with its winding roads and breathtaking views. As we passed through the quaint villages of Maracas and Blanchisseuse, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of anticipation building up. The lush greenery of the rainforest enveloped us, and the distant sound of the ocean waves crashing against the shore was a constant reminder of the adventure that lay ahead.
Our guide, Derreem, was a fountain of knowledge, pointing out various plantations along the way. From dasheen to cocoa, the rich tapestry of the Caribbean’s flora was on full display. We made a quick stop at the Maracas Lookout, where the panoramic view of the Caribbean Sea was nothing short of spectacular. It was the perfect prelude to the adventure that awaited us.
Into the Wild: The Hike to Avocat Waterfall
The hike itself was an exhilarating experience. As someone who has spent countless hours riding the waves, the idea of hiking through a rainforest was a refreshing change of pace. The trail was a mix of easy paths and challenging sections that required a bit of scrambling and wading through hip-deep water. At times, we had to use ropes to navigate the steeper parts, adding an element of thrill to the journey.
Derreem was an excellent guide, always ready with a helping hand and a friendly chat. His tips on where to step to avoid slipping were invaluable, though I did have a moment of clumsiness and ended up in the water. It was all in good fun, and the laughter that followed was infectious. The highlight, of course, was reaching the Avocat Waterfall. Standing at 65 feet, it was a majestic sight, and the plunge pool at its base was the perfect spot for a refreshing swim.
A Taste of Trinidad: Maracas Bay and the Famous Bake & Fish
After the hike, we made our way to Maracas Bay, a beach that holds a special place in my heart. Surrounded by rainforest-covered mountains and lined with coconut trees, it’s a slice of paradise. The water was inviting, and I couldn’t resist taking a dip to wash off the remnants of the hike.
No trip to Maracas Bay is complete without indulging in the famous Bake & Fish sandwich. As a lover of spicy food, I loaded mine with hot pepper sauce, savoring every bite. The combination of crispy fish and homemade bread was a culinary delight, and the perfect way to end a day of adventure.
Reflecting on the experience, the North Coast Waterfall Hike was a perfect blend of nature, adventure, and local culture. It’s a reminder of why I love island life and the endless opportunities for exploration it offers. If you’re ever in the area, I highly recommend this hike for a day of unforgettable memories.
