The exploration of Maratea begins at the city’s summit: Mount San Biagio. From this point, one can marvel at the magnificent statue of Christ the Redeemer, an icon representing not only the town of Maratea but the entire region of Basilicata.
This statue holds the title of being the second largest in the world, surpassed only by Rio de Janeiro’s Christ statue. Maratea’s Christ statue stands at an impressive 21 meters, with arms spread wide to 19 meters and a face of 3 meters.
Constructed by artist Bruno Innocenti in 1965, the statue was sculpted from reinforced concrete and coated with a blend of white cement and Carrara marble.
Following a visit to the captivating Christ statue, tourists proceed to the neighboring Basilica of San Biagio, the town’s patron saint.
The journey then further leads into the medieval village, a maze of old arch-covered houses spaced closely, separated solely by quaint, narrow alleyways and lanes spiraling into small local-stone-paved squares.
