- Marathon Lake - Marathon Lake is an artificial lake located approximately 26km from the heart of Athens. Constructed between 1926 and 1929, the dam was built to meet the increasing water demands of the capital following the large influx of immigrants after the Asia Minor War (1919-1922). The lake blends seamlessly with its natural surroundings, and atop the dam, there is a café offering stunning views. At the time of its construction, the Marathon Dam was a significant symbol of Greece’s modernization. The dam is situated about a 10-minute drive from the site of the Marathon Battle, symbolizing a link between the past and the future. It was constructed using high-quality Pentelic marble, the same material used for the Parthenon. At the base of the dam, workers built a replica of the Athenian Treasury Temple in Delphi, commemorating the victory at Marathon and the extraction of life-sustaining water for Athens’ citizens.
- Archaeological Museum of Marathon - Optional - Located just 5 km from Marathonas, this museum houses artifacts that are 2,500 years old from the area around the Battle of Marathon. It features parts of the monument celebrating the Greek victory over the Persians, Neolithic and ceramic finds, sculptures of Herod Atticus, and much more.
- Marathon Run Museum - The Marathon Run Museum is situated in the town of Marathon, in northeastern Attica, the birthplace of the marathon race. Although small, it contains over 3,100 rare exhibits that chronicle the modern history of the Marathon Race from 1896 to the present day.
- Marathon Tomb - During the Battle of Marathon, the Athenians experienced significant losses. Despite their victory, 192 Athenians perished defending their city. Their remains rest at the impressive Marathon Tomb, also known as the Tomb of the Athenians. Located on the Marathon plain, the 9-meter-high tomb has been a site where Athenians annually honored their fallen. This is one of the monuments you will encounter upon reaching Marathon, paying immense respect to those who sacrificed their lives for their beliefs since antiquity.
