Highlights

Bellingham to Winthrop, WA

North Cascades National Park - Our journey to Winthrop begins in Bellingham, heading east on State Route 20 through the Cascade Mountain Range. Known as “The most beautiful highway in Washington,” this route features waterfalls, lakes, and the Skagit River Hydroelectric Project, which supplies some of Seattle’s electricity.

Skagit River - Following part of our eastern route, the Skagit River was first documented in 1859 by Henry Custer, an American topographer for the US Boundary Commission. Indigenous peoples have inhabited the Skagit for millennia. Archaeological findings suggest that ancestors of the Upper Skagit tribe lived in what is now Ross Lake National Recreation Area at least 8,000 years ago. Today, the river is a popular spot for whitewater rafting and fly fishing.

Newhalem Visitor Center - Newhalem is a company town owned by Seattle City Light, home to permanent residents and employees of the Skagit River Hydroelectric Project.

Gorge Creek Falls - Located on Route 20, the Gorge Creek Falls Trail is a short loop trail leading to a stunning waterfall. This trail is popular for hiking, walking, and nature trips.

Diablo Lake Overlook - Take in the views of glacial-fed Diablo Lake, situated in the heart of the North Cascades. Marvel at the rugged mountains surrounding the lake and the historic Diablo Dam in the distance.

In summer, the lake’s distinctive turquoise color is due to fine rock particles suspended in the water, refracting sunlight. The color is most vibrant on sunny days in July, August, and September during seasonal glacial melt.

Winthrop - We arrive in Winthrop, a quaint old western town with antique boardwalks, charming boutiques, restaurants, diverse lodging options, and outdoor activities. Nestled in the Methow Valley and Okanogan National Forest, it is surrounded by natural beauty.

Shopping, nature walks, and more.

Winthrop - Welcome to the old west town of Winthrop. Wander along its antique boardwalks featuring artisan shops and cafes. Enjoy a nature walk along the Methow River or the hills above the Methow Valley, where you can take in breathtaking views, wildlife, and the beauty of nature.

Goodbye Winthrop
