The Buddhist heritage in Pakistan, particularly the Gandhara legacy, is significant. Siddhartha Gautama, who later became known as the Buddha, traveled and taught in Taxila, located in present-day Punjab, Pakistan. This city was a hub for Buddhist learning, architecture, sculpture, and art for over a millennium. In Swat, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, numerous stupas and monasteries are scattered across the scenic mountains and valleys. Often referred to as Pakistan’s Switzerland, the Swat Valley once hosted around 1,400 monasteries. The renowned Gandhara School of Sculpture was also located in this valley. Visitors can explore monasteries at Barikot, Nemogram, Butkara, and the Jehanabad statue, along with many stupas. The Buddhist monastic complex of Takht-i-Bahi in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, along with the Peshawar Museum, which houses the largest collection of Gandhara artifacts, and the Buddhist ruins at Shahbaz Garhi, featuring the famous Asoka rock edicts, are also noteworthy.
