In particular, the city of Taxila, located in present-day Punjab, Pakistan, holds significance due to being a place where Buddha travelled and spread his teachings. This city acted as a hub for Buddhist education, architectural design, sculpture, and art for over a millennium.
In Swat, located in KPK, an array of stupas and monasteries are scattered amongst its beautiful mountain and valley landscapes. Dubbed as Pakistan’s Switzerland, the Swat valley was home to as many as 1400 monasteries at one point. It also harbored the renowned Gandhara School of Sculpture.
You can find monasteries at locations like Barikot, Nemogram, Butkara, and the famous Jehanabad statue, along with numerous stupas in the region.
The Buddhist monastic complex of Takht-i-Bahi in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province of Pakistan, the Peshawar Museum containing the expansive collection of Gandhara artifacts, and the Buddhist ruins at Shahbaz Garhi, accompanied by the well-known Asoka rocks edicts, are other notable sites.
