MARRAKECH - KASBAH AIT BEN HADDOU - OUARZAZATE – GORGES OF DADES
Marrakech - Depart from Marrakech and travel along a well-paved road to the High Atlas Mountains. After about an hour, the road starts to meander through one of Morocco’s most picturesque routes, passing terraced wheat fields, cacti, swaying palm trees, and endless vistas. Soon, the majestic Kasbah Aït Benhaddou will emerge like a mirage. This kasbah consists of tall-walled buildings made of clay mixed with straw. At the top, there is a stunning view of the surrounding countryside and the citadel itself, giving you the feeling of stepping into a medieval world with its narrow lanes. After lunch, drive through the lush valley to Dades Gorges. You’ll encounter vibrant green palm valleys, rugged mountain peaks in various shapes and colors, small traditional villages, and breathtaking views. As the cliffs begin to narrow, you’ll enter a gorge and reach your destination – a charming mountain hotel where you’ll be welcomed by the friendly owner.
Ait Ben Haddou - Soon, the majestic Kasbah Aït Benhaddou will appear like a mirage. A kasbah is a type of fortress made up of tall-walled buildings constructed from clay mixed with straw, historically used to shelter entire village communities. At the top of the Kasbah, there is a stunning view of the surrounding countryside and the citadel itself, giving you the feeling of stepping into a medieval world with its narrow lanes. The fortified city of Ait Benhaddou has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987. There are many activities to enjoy along the way, perfect for those who don’t mind a bit of hiking to see some exquisite views. Beautiful villages and towns are scattered all around.
Dades Gorges - After lunch, you’ll set off again and drive through the lush valley to Dades Gorges. If you thought the road from Marrakech was beautiful, wait until you see this. You’ll encounter unusual rock formations, vibrant green palm valleys, and rugged mountain peaks in various shapes and colors, interspersed with small traditional villages and breathtaking views. After two hours, you’ll pass a restaurant (‘Panoramic’) with an outdoor terrace overlooking the valley and colorful cliffs. It’s a nice place to stop for a cup of coffee or mint tea. From here, it’s another 40-minute drive past more strange but wonderful colorful rock formations. As the cliffs begin to narrow and you enter a gorge, you’ll know you’ve nearly reached your small mountain hotel. Moments later, you’ll be welcomed by the friendly owner. Enjoy a night and dinner at the hotel (Kasbah La Gazelle) or a similar establishment.
