Highlights

Make it to the first refuge

Toubkal - Pick up from your hotel in Marrakech. After a transfer to the little village of Imlil we begin our trek. Heading along the Mizane Valley, we first pass the village of Aremd and then onto the shrine of Sidi Chamarouch. We then continue east and by crossing the flood plains our route takes us along mule tracks and up into the high rocky cliffs above the valley. Crossing the river we eventually come to the pastoral shrine of Sidi Chamarouch, which attracts tourists and pilgrims. From here the trail continues to climb steadily, snaking and zigzagging its way up to the snowline and the refuge (3206m), our stop for the night.

Additional Information

Embark on an adventure to summit North Africa’s tallest mountain over the course of 2 or 3 days. This journey kicks off and wraps up in the lively city of Marrakech and comprises transportation to and from Imlil. Our expedition will be guided by a local English-speaking leader, accompanied by a local cook and mules to haul our gear. This vigorous trek necessitates a good fitness level rather than mountaineering skills, allowing anyone in good shape to mount the apex. Bring your camera along to capture the breathtaking panorama from the highest point. Mount Toubkal, elevated at 4167m, is North Africa’s tallest mountain, primarily a trekking peak without any climbing involved. Walking with crampons and carrying an ice axe for safety are part of the two-day journey (Nov to April). This path is charted for avid walkers. Although the climb is non-technical, it includes some effortless scrambling and hiking on snow slopes.

Excellent Guide, Amazing Sunrise - I did this trip together with a friend and can wholeheartedly recommend it. The views and landscape are amazing and the people are very friendly and welcoming. The organization is absolutely trustworthy and our guide Mohamed was also excellent. If you are very fit, you can also do the ascent to Toubkal and descent to Imlil in 2 days. This saves you one more day to discover Morocco! Overall it was a great adventure and I will never forget my first sunrise at over 4000m.

Unforgettable Mount Toubkal Adventure - The Mount Toubkal trek was an unforgettable experience that we highly recommend to active individuals who love a challenge. Mohamed Sarkuzi guided us, as inexperienced female hikers, and made us fall in love with the mountains. Mohamed is easy-going, funny, and shares a wealth of knowledge about Berber culture and the surrounding landscapes. He was truly the best guide we could have hoped for. Moreover, the organization is extremely trustworthy, and everything was perfectly arranged.

A genuine adventure accompanied by a wonderful opportunity to explore and understand the culture and traditions of Moroc - What an adventure! We were taken from Marrakech by private taxi to a picturesque mountain village called Imlil. There we stayed in a typicaly styled but high quality hotel. We had time to explore Imlil and I would recommend taking time to look around and walk into the village itself off the main road. The next day the guide met us at the hotel and our packs were taken onto the mule. The muleteer doubled as our private chef for the tour and we were given a wide variety of classic morroccan cuisine, freshly prepared and suited to your dietary requirements. The guide adjusted pace to the needs of the group and being born in the mountains was able to answer a wide range of local and cultural questions. His language skills in English were good and he certainly was able to speak many other European languages. The 1st day walking was approx 5hours plus food and rest stops. Sleeping on the mountain is tricky so bring ear plugs. You have an option of either tents or to stay in the mountain lodge. It can get chilly depending on the time of year. We chose the lodge but it was actually too hot in July. The next morning we started the ascent very early to summit before sunrise. We arrived 30 minutes before sunrise and it was truly spectacular to see the sun rise above Marrakech to one side and the desert to the other. The views are 360 degree from the top and the mountain sides spectacular and steep. The route itself is steep but manageable without climbing skills. Altitude sickness can be a factor for some, this is not related to fitness and is unpredictable. You can reduce the chance of this by spending more time at altitude prior to climbing. There are other walks from the mountain lodge and this can give you time to acclimatise at altitude prior to ascending if you have more time and want to do more trekking. Our group of 4 all managed to climb without problem but be aware it can be chilly particularly if windy at the top. Once the sun came out it rapidly warmed however so it depends what time you climb. We descended via a different route from the ascent because of our knowledgeable guide Ibrahim. This meant we spent the whole descent with only our tour group visible. This is a relatively quiet mountain in terms of other groups and does not feel as if there is an excessive tourism load compared with many other locations. When we returned the guide had already contacted our driver to collect us and we were soon on our way back to Marrakech. Throughout the process of booking and managing the trip Toubkal Guide were very professional and responsive. I have already recommended Toubkal Guide to my friends in Essaouira and would do the same to anyone reading this review.

3 day trek to the summit of Mount Toubkal - My husband and I had an amazing 3 day trek with our guide. We had a mule carrying our gear and a cook. Our cook Youssef was simply amazing and would cook up everything from tajines, couscous, pasta, and rice dishes, both on the trails and at our overnight destinations. The scenery is magnificent and we stayed in the Azzaden Valley on our first night and camped in our tent, which was spectacular. We then stayed at base camp on the second night and also camped, which my husband and I highly recommend, as it’s more peaceful and quiet, versus the dorms. We successfully summitted Mount Toubkal and our guide was fantastic the entire way, ensuring we took breaks and enjoyed the scenery. We also stayed at Imlil Lodge after our trek and it was spectacular. The service, food and facilities were amazing, including a hot shower, a comfortable bed and a private balcony overlooking the mountains. We highly recommend Toubkal Guides!

The Best Trip! 10/10 - Myself and my partner were so excited for the Toubkal trek, which was booked via Adventure Base, and to say our expectations were exceeded would be an understatement! Our guide Mohamed went above and beyond for everything and made us feel very welcome and comfortable, and that goes for all who we met in the National Park, which is breathtakingly beautiful. I wholeheartedly recommend this to all who are interested. Tanmirt Mohamed!

Amazing adventure - Decided to book a last minute trip with toubkal guides last week. Super helpful when booking my trip and organising it giving me all the information I needed. Collected from the airport and taken to their lodge in imlil before meeting my guide Mohammed Sarkozi the following morning. He was super knowledgeable of the area stopping at view points and giving me information about the local area and the different peaks. After making it to the mountain hut, the next morning we went for a walk climbing timesguida, ras ouanoukrim and climbed up to another point on bou ozzual where nobody else seemed to be going but the views were breathtaking. The following day setting off in the dark at 5am we made the summit of toubkal just after sunrise before heading back down to the hut and then walking back to imlil for about 10.45am. Was a great experience and I will definitely be back for another adventure with these guys.

Really well organised and enjoyable trip - I booked last minute and had a great time climbing Mount Toubkal. The trip was really well organised with everything sorted out for me. My cook did a great job and I was incredibly well fed for the whole trip. The views from the top were magnificent as the sun was rising.
