Highlights

Day 1 – Marrakech – Imlil – Toubkal Refuge (B)

Enjoy complimentary hotel pick-up after an early breakfast, and begin a 2-hour drive to the small village of Imlil. You’ll meet up with your guide and mules, load up and set off on the 5 to 6-hour trek to the small refuge below the summit. The tracks are quite steep and narrow in places. You’ll continue climbing through these remote mountains and over several passes before arriving at the refuge where you’ll spend the night, enjoying Berber hospitality.

Accommodation: Les Mouflons – Toubkal Refuge

Day 2 – Toubkal Refuge – Toubkal Summit – Imlil – Marrakech

After an early breakfast, set off to climb the highest peak in the Maghreb. You will reach the summit as the sun rises, rewarding you with amazing views. You won’t encounter any major difficulties during the ascent as the final peak of Toubkal is broad and there is a gradual decline when approaching the summit. You’ll marvel at the high cliffs that plunge into the opposite of the Ifni Lake. After descending from the highest point in North Africa, back down to Imlil you will meet your hotel transport to return to Marrakech.

Note: Mount Toubkal (4167m) is the highest peak in North Africa and allows a trekking experience to the peak which involves no climbing. The itinerary has been designed for keen walkers, as the ascent is non-technical, but does involve some easy scrambling and snow slopes. The views from the summit are amazing across the mountains to Marrakech to the north, and the start of the Sahara to the south. During the ascent you will be rewarded with stunning views of the Atlas Mountains, green valleys and Berber Villages. If you choose to do this itinerary between November and April, two days may involve walking in crampons and using ice axes depending on the amount of snow that has fallen.

Wonderful summit tour with Abdou - Booking with Trekking Morocco, who were the only ones offering a reduced price for the solo tour, first by phone (nice conversation) and later via WhatsApp. Uncomplicated, you are reminded of many things that you should take with you (e.g. pass for national park entry). The taxi transfer went smoothly. In Imlil I then met Abdou, my guide, who approached everything very professionally right from the start. He is very experienced (no wonder, someone who was already on Toubkal at the age of eight!), very patient and adjusts the running pace well. He motivates at the right times and always gives exact time information. You always feel in good hands with him. He and the chef also conjure up delicious dishes during the breaks. I can highly recommend this guide and this company!

Amazing trip to Mount Toubkal - I had a great experience on the two day Toubkal tour. I had booked a group ticket but was the only participant and had a private guide named Ibrahim. Ibrahim was a very good and friendly guide. He puts a lot of emphasis on making you feel comfortable during the climb. He sets a comfortable pace, takes regular breaks and can tell you a lot about the region and nature. It was a great experience and I absolutely recommend it. There were authentic lunches and dinners and an overnight stay at the Refuge Camp. The hike to the camp was very hot, but up on the mountain it can be very cold and windy. Appropriate equipment is therefore recommended

Toubkal with my girlfriend and Ibrahim - We had a great experience with this private tour!!! We started at Imlil with our guide Ibrahim and Omar, the chef. Omar did a great job making breakfast, lunch and dinner with tea. It was a lot and very nice (traditional) dishes. The first day was not easy because of the sun but absolutely doable. You could drop some bags on the mule: Omar takes them with him on the trip to basecamp. There are a couple of stops where you can buy some refreshments (coke, etc.) After 4-5 hours (and break) we arrived at the sleeping place. Overnight we stayed at the basecamp in a shared room (private room was also possible but more expensive). After diner we had a little chitchat with Ibrahim, very nice guy! We asked if we could go early in the morning to the summit to see the sunrise, which wasn’t a problem! Day 2 we started in the dark and after an our of walking my headlight was dead. Ibrahim gave his lamp to me and the trip continued. The last part requires quite a lot of climbing because it is steep, but also again not impossible or dangerous. We reached the summit as the first ones that day and it was unreal and so nice!! Thanks to Ibrahim for his care and good help it was a great and special trip. This trip is highly recommended!!

Good experience - Reasons for 4 star; - pick up was supposed to be 8.30 and was actually 9.15. - stopped on way at an Argan Oil shop - which wasn’t necessary, felt it put the timetable back. - sat down for lunch at 3.30pm and evening meal at 9.30pm. Me and my husband ended up going to bed without eating at 9pm as we was so tired. - wanted everyone up to set off at 4am which after evening meal would mean little to no sleep for some. Some in our group reported not sleeping at all. And other reported they only had an hour sleep. Despite this, I enjoyed the trek and I’m glad I did it. It’s icy in places, and extremely cold. Pack warm layers. Abdul helped me get my warm kit on when I was struggling with the cold. He made sure to hold me arm/hand in icy patches so I didn’t fall and was always reassuring and asking if I needed a break. One person on our treck started with bad altitude sickness and had to go back down but was poorly and couldn’t walk - Abdul carried her all the way down. Mohammed (who was with the faster hikers) then retraced his steps to meet us on the mountain so we wasn’t alone. I packed Diamox. I’m glad I did, a few people struggled with altitude sickness/shortness of breath. Overall I feel the pace could of been a little slower and there should of been more breaks to accommodate for people needing a quick bite to eat/energy.

Excellent trek, but bad admin beforehand. - Overall this was a good experience, however split into 2 parts - Viator/Trekking company admins (1*) and then the trip itself (4*). Firstly with the negative. Viator/treking company admins I give 1 star as they did not answer questions I asked in advance on the trip. This led to being told at 21:45 the night before the trip that they would not be able to collect me from my hotel. Resulting in >£50 of taxis in order to get myself to Imlil for the start of the trek (and home after the trek). I asked Viator >1 month before the trip, then again 1 week before and got no response. Viator could have easily communicated this in advance and I would have adjusted my plans to meet the bus. In addition the trip is not private, but we were a group of 7 people. Finally the lack of communication from Viator made it difficult to plan equipment in advance. Secondly to the good. The trek itself was excellent. Imlil is a lovely village at 2000m where you meet and gather your equipment. From there the trek up to refuge is relatively easy, although I was pleasantly surprised by lot of snow. The summit was brilliant, wearing crampons and using poles was a must to climb a steep 1200m to summit Toubkal. The way all the way back to Imlil is tiring from 4200m, but our full group summited and made it down. The trek is excellent, and our guides were good. Note that it is rustic for those not familiar with trekking - there are limited toilets and you're unlikely to get much sleep at the refuge! All part of the fun!

Viator: 1/5, Experience/Mountain Guides: 5/5 - Viator: 1/5 Experience/mountain guides: 5/5 We booked the 2 day private Mount Toubkal Trek for our family of 4 with 2 young adult children through Viator. We tried to check a few things ahead of time and they were impossible to reach via email or phone. The pickup was about 45 mins late and we still had to drive around Marrakech to pick up 3 more parties. Once we arrived in Imlil we realized that the private tour wasn’t private after all. We were in a group of 12. To cut a long story short: find a different tour provider, do not book through Viator. The mountain guides are accompanied by 2 mules and a cook. If you want to sleep in your own sleeping bag (there are blankets at the refuge) or bring extra gear or luggage, they will put it on the mules and take it up the mountain for you. On day 1 they provide a cooked lunch and dinner - there is always plenty of food. On day 2 they provide breakfast and a cooked lunch. Bring snacks for in between meals or extra boosts of energy during the hike. As there are numerous opportunities during the hike to buy water (including at the refuge), there is no need to bring water for the whole 2 days. Bring a headlamp. You will need it for at least 3 hours of the ascent. And I would highly recommend hiking poles for day 2, it is super steep and rocky all the way up and down. Bring layers and gloves. We did the trek mid May and it got really cold at the top. Day 1 is a 11 km pretty strenuous hike up the mountain to the refuge. Day 2 of the trek is extremely challenging - do not underestimate it. The tour description doesn’t quite explain how challenging it really is. Being an avid hiker like myself (and most of the members in our group) is helpful, but this trek is something else. My 22 year old son was one of two people who didn’t find it particularly hard - he bounded up the mountain like a young goat. We had 2 people in our group of 12 fall ill with altitude sickness. It was a huge struggle for them to get back down to the refuge, they threw up more than once and fell very nauseous and week. I thought about giving up and turning around more than once. I might have cried close to the top and uttered many choice words. And after a very tough ascent and almost equally tough descent (7 kms one way), you still have to hike 11 kms back to Imlil which is strenuous in itself. This was the physically hardest thing I have ever done. The mountain guides were absolutely fantastic. They were very good at looking after everybody and keeping everybody going. Even though we were initially annoyed and disappointed about not being in a private group, being in a big group enabled the 4 of us to hike with people who were hiking at the same pace, which was very motivating. All in all this 2-day trek was a fantastic experience to do as a family with young adults. We will talk about this for years to come. For me personally day 2 was too hard to be enjoyable.

Lovely but be careful - Bittersweet review but necessary. We booked a “private tour” but it wasn’t . We were grouped with 8 other travellers who booked under the same presumption. From the off the organisation of the tour was extremely poor. We had to text to arrange the private transfer and reconfirm the night before as no one reached out to us. Once in the taxi we were driven around Marrakech for 1 hour picking up other members of the tour who were equally disgruntled with the travel arrangements. When we arrived at the start of the trek. We were introduced to the guide who was only interested in selling the hired equipment. He did not check if everyone had the right equipment or their previous hiking experience. We set off later on the first day because of the bad organisation. The trek on the first day itself was lovely and we were very fortunate to have been grouped with a great bunch. The guide stopped once in 4 1/2 hours to give us some information on a local village. We got to the refuge at 7pm on the first night and there were not enough beds for the group which resulted in one tour member sleeping on the floor. There were no private rooms as suggested and you sleep in bunk beds with everyone else hiking. It’s not unusual to to sleep in dorms like this on big hikes but the marketing should not mislead people and suggest a private room. After arriving at the refuge, we did not receive dinner until 10pm well after other groups had eaten. Most groups were in bed at 8:30 ready for the 3am start the following morning. As a group we highlighted that we were upset that we were eating so late considering the early start the next day. We had to remind the guide that we would need to start the trek at 3am to get a sunrise on the mountain of which he replied to us that there would be no sunrise… unfortunately another member of the tour fell Ill to altitude sickness and the Guide was no where to be found during the 3 hours after arrival at the refuge. We received the hired equipment at the end of the day. Some members were given hiking boots which did not fit and two left foot crampons. They were told to do the hike in trainers and that crampons could be applied!! Fortunately these members dropped out of the tour when they did, or they would have almost certainly developed frostbite or orthopaedic injuries on the push for the summit. During the summit push itself the guide did not check everyone was okay and shouted at two members of the group that had altitude sickness halfway up the mountain. Fortunately another guide took them down. As an experienced mountaineer upto 6500m I thought this was shocking. 6/10 made the summit with 2 being left just below the summit as the guide was unwilling to guide them along a ridge because they wanted to use crampons. Once the summit was made the guide congratulated those at the top and immediately proceeded to tell us to counter review any bad review they might leave after the trek. This was disgusting… a guide should never leave a member of a tour unaccompanied let alone moan about them to other members. The problem was that there was not enough guides for the group members. The final icing on the cake was the transportation back to Marrakech to which we were dropped in the wrong part of the city after much reassurance. The group we were with were fantastic and definitely made the trip worthwhile for us but unfortunately the guiding and organisation was not up to scratch. Please read this review and take into consideration when booking. This is coming from an experienced trekker 😃

We would have been better off just climbing on our own. - So many ways....First, we booked a private guide. There were 10 of us on the climb. All great people but...we booked a private guide. We booked a private room at the refuge. We spent all night awake in a room with six people making all the human sounds you can imagine. The guide service leave a lot to be desired. Fortunately I have a lot of experience climbing so we were able to deal with it. It can be improved by: Providing transportation to and from the trail head. We had to walk about 2.5 miles to get to the start of the trail. No big deal on the way up but it would be good to pick up the clients at the end of a day that includes 3,000' of ascent and 7,000' of descent. Bring your own crampons, the ones they provide are very old and do not fit regular hiking shoes well. For a spring/summer climb bring a good pair of microspikes. Bring layers of clothing including a puffy. Bring gloves and a wool hat. It is very windy and cold on the second morning and you will be doing much of the climb in the dark. Bring your own hiking poles, the ones they provide are pretty cheap. They say you can get stuff in Ismil but most of it appeared used. The guide did not pay attention to some of our group when they got scared crossing some of the snow fields. They are steep enough and if you slip you're going to slide a long ways.
