Alexandria is situated on the northern coast of Egypt, by the Mediterranean Sea. An ancient city founded in 331 BC by the youthful Alexander the Great at age 25, its historical grandeur is mythical. It was once the home of the colossal Pharos lighthouse, which guided ships into the ancient harbor and was considered one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Likewise, its Great Library was known as the repository of ancient knowledge. Unfortunately, the Pharos eventually toppled, and the Great Library caught fire. Portions of the ancient city are now submerged under water, while others lie beneath the contemporary city.
Among the myriad of historical attractions that you can explore are:
- The New Library of Alexandria (located where the ancient one once stood)
- The Qaittbai fortress or Citadel (erected on the site of the ancient lighthouse)
- The Greek Catacombs
- Pompey’s Pillar
- The Alexandria National Museum
- The Greek Museum
- Montazah Park
…and many more.
