The allure of Egypt’s West Desert had been calling to me for some time, and the Siwa Oasis Tour seemed like the perfect opportunity to answer that call. Upon reaching Marsa Matruh, we were greeted by the stunning Corniche area, where the azure waters of the Mediterranean provided a breathtaking backdrop for our breakfast. After a brief rest, we continued our journey to Siwa, stopping at Fontas Island for a sunset tea that painted the sky in hues of orange and pink. Despite the chill in the air, the tents and sleeping bags kept us warm and comfortable, allowing us to drift off to sleep under a blanket of stars.

The following day, the weather took a turn, with winds sweeping across the desert. Unfortunately, this meant that the salt lake bath was not possible, but the landscape’s stark beauty was still captivating. We explored the Mountain of the Dead and the Temple of the Oracle of Amun, each site offering a glimpse into the rich history and culture of the region. The Siwan people, with their warm hospitality and fascinating stories, made the experience all the more enriching.

A Taste of Siwa and a Fond Farewell

The culinary aspect of the tour was a delightful surprise. While some meals were simple, others, like the Egyptian pies and chicken with olives, were a treat for the taste buds. The team was attentive, always ensuring we had snacks on hand, which kept our energy levels up for the adventures ahead. The only downside was the lack of a proper lunch on the return journey, which made the drive back to Cairo feel longer than anticipated.

As we bid farewell to Siwa, I carried with me not just memories of the stunning landscapes and thrilling adventures, but also a deeper appreciation for the delicate balance of life in the desert.
