Additional Information

Matera is renowned for its ancient Sassi, carved into the rock some nine thousand years ago. This unique global heritage has earned it a place among UNESCO’s World Heritage sites. In recognition of its cultural significance, Matera was also named the European Capital of Culture in 2019. On this tour, we’ll explore how Matera’s residents managed to live in these narrow tuff tunnels for thousands of years, up until the mid-1950s.

We’ll visit the rock-hewn churches of San Pietro Barisano and Santa Lucia alle Malve, both adorned with medieval frescoes. Following this, we’ll take a refreshing panoramic walk along the city’s ramparts. From Matera’s bastions, we’ll enjoy views of the Sassi and the surrounding countryside, capturing the magical atmosphere with our best photographs. Our local guides will captivate you with the mysteries and details of this still-authentic city.

This tour is a must-try: Matera will leave you breathless!
