Highlights
  • Piazza San Pietro Caveoso - The journey takes you through the most captivating sights and scenes of historic Matera, including the Sasso Caveoso and sections of the Sasso Barisano.\n\nOn this excursion, which avoids the typical tourist paths, you’ll gradually uncover Matera’s history and learn why it remained obscure until the early 21st century. As you meander through the narrow streets, you’ll delve into Matera’s ethos, hearing tales and the experiences of those who inhabited the Sassi of Matera. The tour encompasses discussions on art, anthropology, and architecture, offering a comprehensive view that reveals how Matera transformed from being Italy’s ‘disgrace’ to a ‘World Heritage’ site.\n\nThis is not your standard tour focused on visiting churches; instead, it’s an exploration of the city’s labyrinthine heart.\n\nAlong with myself, Renato, you might also be guided by Sara, Domenico, or Gaetano, all passionate guides who cherish Matera and the Sassi region.

Recommended! - Mega interesting. The guide was very enthusiastic and also conveyed this in his stories. In addition, he spoke good English. We were taken into the history of Matera. The stories allowed us to imagine what it was like back in the day. Very handy that ears were used so that you could continue to hear the guide well. It was very hot, which made us dread the walk. That was not so bad in the end! This was taken into account by seeking out the shadow. The guide also explained that the construction of Matera creates an optical illusion. We would definitely recommend this tour if you come to visit Matera! Credits to our guide. He made the tour and afterwards also gave us a good tip for dinner.

Incredible Storytelling of Matera’s History! - We had a wonderful visit of Matera with Gaetano! He explained the history of the city in a way that we almost felt like it was a documentary, except we could ask all the questions we wanted! I really recommend this tour.

The perfect tour of Matera - This tour was the perfect way to see Matera. We were in a small group led by Gaetano, who obviously enjoys teaching people about this beautiful city. The two hour tour took us from the bottom to the top, stopping at many points along the way to find some shade and hear Gaetano’s stories. At the end he gave us wonderful restaurant recommendations that were a little off the beaten path — exactly what we were looking for. We highly recommend anyone looking for a tour of Matera choose this one.

The best way to see Matera - Renato was an excellent guide - very knowledgeable, fun and personable. We particularly liked the fact that Renato and his family are from Matera. His stories about his grandmother in particular were fun. We did the afternoon tour which was still very hot. Definitely take water with you and wear comfortable flat shoes. It was quite hilly in places and with the heat, could be challenging if you aren't particularly fit. Loved the tour and took lots of amazing photos.
