Highlights
  • Sassi di Matera - Matera is a source of shame for Italy, a place of poverty, high quality of childhood mortality, where people lived in caves without electricity , running water or sewage. Carlo Levi’s book “Christ Stopped at Eboli” raised awareness of the desperate conditions people were living in and about half the 30,000 population were moved to new homes in the modern part of the city between 1953 and 1968. Matera is located in a remote corner of Southern Italy in the small region Basilicata. It was not the only reason why it has been managed to remain unknown, especially since it became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993 and restaurants. Do not miss to visit Matera!

Additional Information

Matera is among the world’s most ancient cities, boasting a continuous habitation that dates back to the Neolithic era - around 7,000 years ago! In the 1950s, the town was largely neglected by the Italian government, until forced to take action to improve the dire living conditions of its inhabitants. They constructed a new town nearby and relocated the entire population from their antiquated cave homes. In contrast, the quaint town of Alberobello, located in Italy’s southern region of Puglia, offers an intriguing sight. Esteemed as a UNESCO world heritage site, Alberobello is unique with its igloo-like, pristine stone buildings - the beehive-shaped trulli. With their history potentially dating back to the 15th century, these structures, built from local limestone, are unique to Alberobello and cannot be found anywhere else in the world.
