You will be transported to Piazza Vittorio Veneto in Matera, using a stylish van or car. This is where you can find the viewpoint of the Sasso Barisano, along with the Sasso Caveoso, these are the major draws of Matera. As your journey continues, you will take in sights of the Madonna della Bruna Cathedral, established in 1270, the Palazzo del Sedile, a Renaissance-era edifice now housing the Duni Conservatory; Madonna dell’Idris and San Giovanni in Monterrone, two churches constructed partially from excavations dating back to the 11th century. Touring the famed Sassi, a Unesco heritage site since 1993, reveals the Gravina di Matera, a canyon gradually carved by the Gravina creek, plus the Murgia Materana Park, a location filled with hundreds of rock churches, hermitages, and monasteries, later repurposed by shepherds for seasonal migration. We’ll also stop by a traditional cave dwelling and the 11th-century rock church of Santa Lucia alle Malve during this tour.
