Highlights
  • Sassi di Matera - The tour starts with the group’s gathering from Piazza Pascoli with an engaging historical / architectural and anthropological introduction of the Sassi with the background of the marvelous view over the Sasso Caveoso;

The tour continues towards the Caveoso district in a continuous succession of ramps and stairs that constitute the roofs of the caves below; the wide field of view allows the eye to wander and give the eyes and the heart breathtaking panoramic views of the Sasso Caveoso and the Rione “alle Malve or“ Casalnuovo ”, the Murgico plateau and the imposing karst fracture that constitutes the canyon of Gravina di Matera.

Arrived on the bottom of Via Bruno Buozzi the tour continues with a visit to a typically furnished cave-dwelling, which will allow us to have the perception of the “sad humanity” of this rural world and to understand how it lived in cohabitation with the animals until in the late fifties.

Then we continue to visit the two rock churches, located on the “Rupe dell’Idris” and from which we can enjoy another suggestive panorama of the Sassi, Santa Maria dell ‘Idris and San Giovanni in Monterrone, the latter completely excavated in the rock and casket of Italo-Greek monasticism with precious iconographic evidence of the century X-XIII.

As an alternative to the churches mentioned above, instead of these, the visit of the rock church of Santa Lucia alle Malve, located in the homonymous district, could be included in the tour, which represents the first example of Benedictine frequentation in Matera of the VIII century. d. C. and which houses precious testimonies of Byzantine frescoes dated from the 10th to the 13th century.

After the Visit of the Rock Churches it will be possible to visit a workshop and handicraft laboratory of ceramics and papier-mâché where the typical objects of the Matera tradition and popular culture will be illustrated by the direct voice of the craftsman. Finally, after traveling through time and space from the Paleolithic to the present day, the tour ends with a small tasting of typical products in a specially recreated environment.

Visit to the Sassi with Antonio - The visit to the ancient Sasso Caveoso in the company of Antonio to discover the caves and rock churches was very pleasant and evocative. Antonio, in love with his city and very knowledgeable, told us stories and background, introduced us to Mario, the very nice craftsman from Matera and offered a welcome tasting at the end of the tour. Recommended for those who want to be told about the city. The tour is doable by everyone. In this season the heat makes it a little more difficult.

Our experience in Matera. - I found this tour on Tripadvisor and trusted the positive comments. The choice turned out to be more than right. The guide Antonio was more than up to the task. Very prepared, competent and engaging, he managed to involve the whole group and my son was at his side the whole time.

Interesting tour - Immediate thanks to our guide Antonio, tour of Sasso Caveoso expertly conducted. In Matera it is necessary to be transported and the agency does it properly. In the future maybe we will go to the Murge or to Sasso Barisano.

Sun and water among the Matera stones - The beauty of this tour can only be attributed to the exceptional nature of the spectacular and very interesting teacher guide Antonio. Don't forget Chiara at the end of the tour for the tastings in the agency.

What wasn't needed... - The visit lasted less than expected. Antonio, the very knowledgeable guide. We didn't like the forced stop at the craft shop. The sole aim of making us buy is the owner of the shop, unpleasant and arrogant. Furthermore, at the end of the tour, a compulsory stop at the agency, for tasting products, the sole purpose of which is to sell them at increased prices. Furthermore, attempted sale of lithographs made by Antonio. However, the stones are worth it.

Drive towards the guide, not towards Matera. - Antonio declares at the beginning that he is a licensed guide. Despite the correct information prepared by heart and having to repeat the tour several times, we were unable to experience the magic of Matera. This is because we were very disturbed by the continuous marketing incursions for personal purposes, which damage the whole experience. Concrete examples: halfway through the tour the "guide" insistently suggests subscribing to his channel, saying that he has already published 18 videos on another archaeological site. The non-agency channel: your own. He makes sure everyone goes to his YouTube and Instagram channel and clicks “Follow or Subscribe.” He didn't make an invitation, on the contrary, he took out the QR code and placed it in front of everyone until it was scanned. This unpleasant moment is also repeated at the end of the tour: he himself declares that he is making personal publicity about the sale of his paintings, exhibited within the agency. We were embarrassed both by this amateurishness of the proposal and by the fact that the agency itself allows this. It makes everything unprofessional and leaves the feeling of just being customers taken to places used for marketing: the last one is the aperitif organized inside the agency with the aim of suggesting the purchase of their products. It can be done, it's a style choice made by the agency and this one, in our opinion, has none. In short, despite the thousand notions, we were "guided" towards the "guide", not towards Matera.
