Highlights
  • Oak Openings Preserve - Nestled between Whitehouse and Swanton, Oak Openings Preserve derives its name from the surrounding area, which is 23 times larger than the park itself. Despite this, at 5,000 acres, Oak Openings Preserve is by far the largest of the Metroparks.

The park’s natural habitats vary from oak savanna to wetlands to vegetated sand. The Nature Conservancy once recognized the sandy region as one of the 200 “Last Great Places on Earth.”

Prickly-pear cactus, wild lupine, and sand cherry flourish on dry, hot dunes just a few yards away from orchids thriving in low, wet swales.

  • Fallen Timbers Battlefield - Visit monuments that honor Maj. Gen. Anthony Wayne and the soldiers and American Indians who perished in 1794 during the Battle of Fallen Timbers, the concluding battle of the Northwest Indian Wars. This National Historic Landmark is situated near the Maumee River.
