Into the Heart of the Okavango Delta

As the plane descended into Maun, the gateway to Botswana’s wilderness, I felt a familiar thrill. The anticipation of another African adventure was palpable. This time, I was embarking on an 11-day safari through Botswana’s pristine wildlife areas, a journey that promised to be as exhilarating as it was enlightening. From the moment I was picked up at the airport, the seamless organization by Walking Stick Safari was evident. Our first destination was the Okavango Delta, a UNESCO World Heritage site renowned for its unique ecosystem.

The mokoro excursion was a serene introduction to the Delta’s beauty. Gliding silently through the reed-fringed waters, I was captivated by the symphony of bird calls and the gentle rustle of the papyrus. Our guide, Emanuel, was a master at spotting wildlife. Leaving the Delta, we journeyed to Moremi Game Reserve, where our campsite overlooked the Khwai River. The sight of elephants crossing the river at dawn was a moment of pure magic. Moremi’s game drives were a photographer’s dream. With Gabana as our guide, we were treated to unforgettable wildlife encounters. His dedication to finding the best photo opportunities was unparalleled. From the majestic lions lounging in the shade to the elusive leopards prowling through the underbrush, each sighting was a testament to the rich biodiversity of the region.

The highlight, however, was the pack of wild dogs with their playful puppies. Watching them interact was a rare privilege, one that underscored the importance of conservation efforts. Gabana’s knowledge of the terrain and his intuitive understanding of lighting conditions ensured that every photograph captured the essence of the moment. As the sun dipped below the horizon, we enjoyed sundowners in carefully chosen spots, each offering a unique perspective of the landscape.

Adventures in Savuti and Chobe

Our journey continued to Savuti, a region famed for its large predators. The thrill of spotting lions and leopards was matched by the awe of witnessing the vast herds of buffalo and elephants. The crew’s attention to detail and commitment to our comfort was evident throughout. Chobe National Park was the grand finale of our safari. Known for its dense elephant population, the park did not disappoint.
