Ile aux Aigrettes Nature Reserve - Ile aux Aigrettes is a testament to the conservation efforts by the Mauritian Wildlife Fund to preserve the island’s unique fauna and flora. Located about 800 meters from the mainland, this nature reserve is rich in dense vegetation typical of Mauritius’ coastal regions.

Visitors can take a 1 hour and 30-minute guided trail to explore an ebony forest, once home to the dodo, a nursery with thousands of young plants, the ruins of an old limekiln, and a breathtaking view of Mahebourg Bay. During the tour, you may encounter local wildlife such as the Mauritian gecko, the Pink Pigeon, the endangered Telfair skink, and the giant Aldabra tortoise, which was introduced to replace Mauritius’ now-extinct land tortoises. With some luck, you might also spot the Mauritian Kestrel, a species saved from extinction and now freely roaming the island’s forest.
