- Trou aux Cerfs - Start your 8-hour tour with a hotel pick-up from anywhere in Mauritius. You’ll meet your guide, board a comfortable vehicle, and head to your first stop.
Your first destination is Trou Aux Cerfs, a renowned natural attraction in Mauritius. This dormant volcanic crater stands about 605 meters above sea level, with a diameter of 350 meters and a depth of around 100 meters.
Unlike typical volcanic features, the crater of Trou aux Cerfs is surrounded by a vast forest area filled with indigenous plants and giant green pine trees. It is believed that Trou aux Cerfs erupted once and has been dormant for the last 700,000 years, though experts think it could become active again.
One of the main highlights is the 360-degree view of Curepipe town and the majestic Rempart Mountain, Trois Mamelles, and the Port-Louis-Moka mountain range.
- Reservoir Viewpoint - Next, you’ll head to Mare Aux Vacoas reservoir, the largest on the island with a capacity of almost 26 million cubic meters. It’s a popular stop for tourists visiting the south of the island.
Though not as fancy as other attractions, Mare aux Vacoas is a hidden gem surrounded by thick forests. It’s the perfect place to spend a few relaxing minutes away from the hustle and bustle. The reservoir offers a stunning view worth capturing.
- Grand Bassin - Continue to Ganga Talao, also known as Grand Bassin, a crater lake about 550 meters above sea level in the mountainous southwest of Mauritius. On the shoreline, you’ll find a temple and small shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva and other gods.
During your visit, you’ll be awestruck by the gigantic 33-meter-high statue of Lord Shiva, the tallest in Mauritius. Ganga Talao is a major attraction, drawing many visitors who come to pray, meditate, or simply enjoy the beautiful surroundings. The lake is about 18 meters deep and home to a healthy population of fish.
Your full-day scenic tour of the southwest ends with a return to your hotel.
- Alexandra Falls - The next stop is Alexandra Falls, situated about 700 meters above sea level and one of the most popular nature sites in Mauritius.
You’ve likely seen its pictures on postcards or in videos showcasing Mauritius’s beauty. Alexandra Falls is famous for its breathtaking beauty and offers a unique experience with nature.
Don’t miss the chance to capture the panoramic view of the South-East Coast with its turquoise ocean. You can climb a wooden platform for a full view.
To your right is Alexandra Falls, a silent white stream cascading over rocky outcrops. You’ll also have a view of Mauritius’s virgin green valley, home to many endemic species of birds and plants. It’s a sight to soothe the eyes.
- Black River Gorges National Park - Next, you’ll head to the gorge viewpoint, the best place for a panoramic view. Midway between Chamarel and Alexandra Falls, this spot offers a stunning panorama. It’s a must-stop location during a road trip from Grand Bassin to Le Morne. The viewpoint is just a 3-5 minute walk from the road and offers a spectacular view.
The national park covers almost 17,000 acres of unspoiled rainforest, rolling hills, deep valleys, spectacular waterfalls, and diverse flora and fauna in the southwestern region.
You’ll be amazed at how elevated the viewing area is above the gorge. There’s a nice waterfall to your right.
The park is famous for its array of endemic flora and fauna, and the viewpoint offers an overview of its natural beauty.
The Black River Gorges National Park protects most of the island’s remaining rainforest and is home to many species of wild animals and birds.
- Bois Cheri Tea Factory and Tea Museum - Then, you’ll visit the Bois Chéri Tea factory. A guide will lead you through the factory and tea plantation, sharing the history and importance of tea production in Mauritius.
After the guided tour, you’ll visit the tea museum to learn more about the history of tea in Mauritius.
Bois Chéri offers a great panoramic view of the island’s south. The factory now produces a range of flavored teas, green teas, and herbal teas, which you can taste during your visit.
Your visit includes:
- A guided tour of the Bois Chéri tea factory
- A visit to the tea museum
- A visit to the tea plantation
- A tea tasting with a panoramic view of the flora and fauna
- Gris Gris Beach - Next, you’ll head to Souillac to see the stunning view of Gris-Gris. The high cliffs here drop abruptly to the sea, and the refreshing winds of the Indian Ocean blow all year round.
Gris-Gris is known for its sea cliffs and offers a magnificent view from the top. This part of the island is not surrounded by coral reefs, allowing large waves to crash directly on the cliffs.
You’ll have a great viewpoint to see the waves crashing against the cliffs.
Afterward, you’ll head to a local restaurant for a 3-course Mauritian lunch, including fresh salads, rice, soups, chicken curry, or fish and vegetables. The chef will explain the options and ask for your preference.
- La Vanille Nature Park - Finally, you’ll visit La Vanille crocodile park to discover the flora and fauna endemic to Mauritius. You’ll see animals like Nile crocodiles, tenrecs, eels, iguanas, and turtles from Madagascar and Seychelles.
The park also features a collection of fossils of extinct animals from Mauritius and surrounding islands, such as the dodo and the elephant bird of Madagascar. You’ll also learn about insects at the park’s insectarium, which houses a rare collection of species from around the world.
The park covers 3.5 hectares and is home to many other animals, including monkeys, bats, deer, geckos, wild boars, and carp. It also houses 2,000 Nile crocodiles at various stages of growth.
