- Trou aux Cerfs - Start your 7-8 hour southwest scenic tour with a convenient hotel pick-up anywhere in Mauritius. You’ll be warmly welcomed by our certified guide, and after settling into your comfortable vehicle, you’ll embark on your first destination.
Your journey begins at Trou Aux Cerfs, a renowned natural attraction in Mauritius. This dormant volcanic crater stands approximately 605 meters above sea level, with a diameter of 350 meters and a depth of about 100 meters.
Unlike typical volcanic landscapes, the crater of Trou aux Cerfs is encircled by a vast expanse of lush forest, featuring indigenous plant species and towering green pine trees. It is believed that Trou aux Cerfs erupted once and has remained dormant for the past 700,000 years; experts suggest there is a potential for future activity.
One of the main highlights is the breathtaking 360-degree view of the town of Curepipe, along with the majestic vistas of Rempart Mountain, Trois Mamelles, and the Port-Louis-Moka mountain range.
- Mare aux Vacoas - Next, proceed to the Mare Aux Vacoas reservoir, the largest on the island, with a capacity of nearly 26 million cubic meters. It is a popular stop for tourists exploring the southern part of the island.
While it may not be as extravagant as other attractions in Mauritius, Mare aux Vacoas is a hidden gem nestled among thick forests. It’s the perfect spot to enjoy a few moments of relaxation away from the usual hustle and bustle. The reservoir offers a stunning view that’s worth capturing.
- Grand Bassin - Continue your journey to Ganga Talao, commonly known as Grand Bassin, a crater lake situated about 550 meters above sea level in the mountainous southwest of Mauritius. Along the shoreline, you’ll find a temple and several small shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva and other deities.
During your visit to this sacred site, you’ll be captivated by the enormous statue of Lord Shiva. Rest assured, at Grand Bassin, you’ll find the Hindu God Lord Shiva, smiling and serene. The statue stands 33 meters tall, making it the tallest known statue in Mauritius. Ganga Talao is a major attraction in Mauritius, drawing many visitors who come to pray, meditate, or simply stroll by the lake and enjoy the stunning surroundings. The lake is believed to be around 18 meters deep and is home to a thriving population of fish and eels.
- Alexandra Falls - Next, travel to Alexandra Falls, where you can admire the cloud forest of Mt Cocotte and the waterfall, along with the view down to the south coast.
If you love waterfalls, this is a must-see! Alexandra Falls is hidden in the deep jungle of the Black River Gorges and feels like a scene from a movie! Wandering through this enchanting setting is truly unique. The allure of cascading water, surrounded by lush greenery and the sounds of local bird species and other creatures, provides a perfect backdrop for relaxation. Don’t miss the opportunity to capture the panoramic view of the South Coast with its turquoise ocean. The surroundings of the waterfalls resemble a real jungle book, offering tranquility and peace while you enjoy one of the best sights in Mauritius.
- Black River Gorges National Park - Next, head to Gorge Viewpoint, where you’ll stop for a stunning panoramic view of the endless green stretches. Amidst the pristine rainforest of Mauritius, there are nearly 17,000 acres of rolling hills, deep valleys, spectacular waterfalls, and unparalleled beauty of flora and fauna in the southwestern region. You’ll be amazed by the height of the viewing area from the gorge. On the right side of the viewpoint, you can see a breathtaking waterfall. The path leading to the viewpoint has its own unique ambiance, with some souvenir stalls. Additionally, you might encounter a group of monkeys that greet you as a sign of welcome. The Black River Gorges Nature Reserve was established to preserve the island’s natural vegetation and is one of the most important sights in Mauritius.
The Black River Gorges National Park protects most of the island’s remaining rainforest and is home to many species of wild animals and birds.
- Bassin Blanc - The scenic route to Bassin Blanc in Mauritius is a breathtaking journey through the island’s lush and verdant forests. The road winds through dense vegetation, offering stunning views of Mauritius’ natural beauty. The most impressive feature of the road is the nearly 180-degree bend it takes at one point, providing a dramatic and exhilarating experience for travelers.
Photographs of this scenic route capture the essence of Mauritius’ natural beauty. The dense and lush forest creates a canopy of greenery over the road, providing a sense of serenity and tranquility for those who pass through. The tall trees and dense underbrush offer glimpses of the vibrant wildlife that inhabits this forest, with birds chirping and small mammals scurrying in the undergrowth.
- La Vallee des Couleurs - Next, visit the Twenty-Three colored earth, a natural phenomenon and prominent tourist attraction. The colors evolved through the conversion of basaltic lava to clay minerals. An almost surreal, lunar-like spectacle of rainbow-hued sand dunes unfolds before your eyes, leaving you utterly mesmerized. Set amidst lush green vegetation, this unique geological oddity is one of those amazing creations of nature that make you go “Wow.”
It is a relatively large area of sand dunes comprising sand of seven distinct colors: red, brown, violet, green, blue, purple, and yellow. What’s more fascinating is that if you mix the colored earth together, they’ll eventually settle into separate layers. You may also be puzzled as the colors might play tricks on you and appear as shadows.
There is also a Tortoise Park and Souvenir Shop offering a variety of memorabilia, including local products, while the Coffee shop provides a delightful cafe experience.
- La Vallee des Couleurs - Undoubtedly, the beautiful single-drop waterfall in Mauritius, the Chamuny Waterfall, is a striking piece of nature standing amid dense vegetation.
The Chamouny falls are the most famous and recognized waterfalls in Mauritius and have always been a main attraction for tourists. If you’re visiting, you simply cannot miss the magnificent “best waterfalls in Mauritius!”
- Souillac - Located in the middle of the south coast of the island, it is surrounded by a still wild and preserved nature that you can explore with pleasure, for example, during hiking. Far from the turquoise and calm waters of the lagoons, Souillac and its coastline will surprise you with their waves, unlike anywhere else in Mauritius!
Afterward, head to a local restaurant to savor a 3-course Mauritian lunch, including fresh salads, rice, soups, chicken curry, or fish and vegetables. You’ll have a choice, and the chef will explain and ask about your preferred option.
- Gris Gris Beach - The appeal of Gris Gris lies in its scenery, where high cliffs drop abruptly to the sea, and the refreshing winds of the Indian Ocean blow all year round.
Gris-Gris is renowned for its sea cliffs and offers visitors a magnificent view from the top. Coral reefs do not surround this part of the island, allowing large waves to crash directly on the cliffs, creating impressive splashes of water.
You’ll have a great viewpoint on the cliffs and witness the waves crashing against the flanks. There is a small garden offering many quiet spots for relaxation on one of the benches, while enjoying the view of the sea, waves, and rock cliffs. From the garden, a path leads to a small beach where you can admire the sea up close. Despite the white sandy beach, the waves and currents are extremely strong, so swimming is not advised. Instead, take a stroll and admire the view.
