Your first destination is Trou Aux Cerfs, a renowned natural tourist attraction. This volcanic crater stands approximately 605 meters above sea level, with a diameter of 350 meters and a depth of about 100 meters.
Unlike typical volcanic features, Trou aux Cerfs’ crater is encircled by a vast expanse of lush forest, featuring indigenous plant species and towering green pine trees. It is believed that Trou aux Cerfs erupted once and has remained dormant for the past 700,000 years; experts suggest there is a potential for future activity.
A definite highlight is the 360-degree view of the town of Curepipe, along with the majestic vistas of Rempart Mountain, Trois Mamelles, and the Port-Louis-Moka mountain range.
- Mare aux Vacoas - Next, visit the Mare Aux Vacoas reservoir, the largest on the island, with a capacity of nearly 26 million cubic meters. It is a popular stop for tourists exploring the island’s south.
While not as extravagant as other attractions in Mauritius, Mare aux Vacoas is a hidden gem nestled among dense forests. It offers a perfect spot for a few relaxing moments away from the usual hustle and bustle. The reservoir provides a stunning view worth capturing.
- Grand Bassin - Journey to Ganga Talao, a crater lake situated about 550 meters above sea level in the mountainous Southwest of Mauritius. A temple and several small shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva and other deities are located along the shoreline.
During your visit to this sacred site, you will be captivated by the enormous statue of Lord Shiva. However, there is no need to fear; at Grand Bassin, the Hindu God Lord Shiva is depicted as smiling and peaceful. The statue stands 33 meters high, making it the tallest known statue in Mauritius. Ganga Talao attracts many visitors who come to pray, meditate, or simply enjoy a walk by the lake and the beautiful surrounding views.
- Alexandra Falls Car Park - Continue to Alexandra Falls, where you can admire the cloud forest of Mt Cocotte and the waterfall, along with views down to the south coast.
If you love waterfalls, this is a must-see! Alexandra Falls is hidden in the deep jungle of the Black River Gorges and resembles a scene from a movie. Strolling through this enchanting setting is truly unique! The allure of cascading water, surrounded by lush greenery and the sounds of local birds and other creatures, provides a perfect escape for mental relaxation. Don’t miss the chance to capture the panoramic view of the South Coast with its turquoise ocean. The surroundings of the waterfalls resemble a real jungle book, promising tranquility and peace while you enjoy one of the best sights in Mauritius.
- Black River Gorges National Park - Next, visit the Gorge Viewpoint for a breathtaking panoramic view of the endless green expanses. Amidst the untouched rainforest of Mauritius, there are nearly 17,000 acres of rolling hills, deep valleys, spectacular waterfalls, and unparalleled flora and fauna in the southwestern region. You will be amazed by the height of the viewing area from the gorge. On the right side of the viewpoint, you can see a stunning waterfall. The path leading to the viewpoint has a unique ambiance with some souvenir stalls. The Black River Gorges Nature Reserve was established to preserve the island’s natural vegetation and is one of the most important sights in Mauritius.
The Black River Gorges National Park protects most of the island’s remaining rainforest and is home to many species of wild animals and birds.
- Chamarel - Travel through Chamarel village to reach Le Morne village. You will have the opportunity to observe the culture and lifestyle of the people living in Chamarel.
Upon arriving in Chamarel, head to the impressive Chamarel Viewpoint, a family-friendly spot offering a panoramic view of the entire Chamarel village below. From there, you can see the lush greenery and turquoise waters of the southwest coast, with Le Morne Brabant to the left and La Tourelle du Tamarin to the right. It’s recommended to bring sunglasses and a camera to capture the splendid view of the green hilly region and an aerial view of Ile Aux Benitiers.
-
Ilot Fourneau - Head to Islet Fourneau to enjoy a 3-course Mauritian lunch. Upon arriving at Le Morne village, board a boat at the Jetty and set off to Islet Fourneau. Once there, enjoy a welcoming drink while relaxing on the Sun Loungers and admiring the panoramic view of Le Morne mountain. There are excellent opportunities for romantic photos if you’re with a loved one. Activities such as stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking, and pedalo are available on the island (optional).
