Highlights
  • Padma Bridge - The Padma Multipurpose Bridge

The Padma Multipurpose Bridge is a two-level road-rail bridge spanning the Padma River, the primary distributary of the Ganges in Bangladesh. The bridge was officially opened on the morning of June 25, 2022.

This bridge is regarded as the most complex construction project in Bangladesh’s history. The steel truss bridge supports a four-lane highway on its upper level and a single-track railway on its lower level. It comprises 41 sections, each measuring 150.12 meters (492.5 feet) in length and 22 meters (72 feet) in width, with an overall length of 6.15 kilometers (3.82 miles). It stands as the longest bridge in Bangladesh, the longest bridge over the Padma River by both span and total length, and boasts the deepest pile depth of any bridge globally at 127 meters (417 feet). The construction was particularly challenging due to the Padma River’s width and depth.

  • Shat Gambuj Mosque - The Sixty Dome Mosque is located in Bagerhat and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is the largest mosque in Bangladesh from the Sultanate period (1352–1576), built by Khan Jahan Ali during the Bengal Sultanate. It has been hailed as “one of the most impressive Muslim monuments in all of South Asia.” In the mid-15th century, it was part of a Muslim colony and is the largest multi-domed mosque in Bangladesh. Construction began in 1442 and was completed in 1459.

The ‘Sixty Dome’ Mosque is characterized by its unusually thick, tapered brick walls in the Tughlaq style and a hut-shaped roofline that foreshadows later architectural styles. Its rectangular plan measures 148’6” x 101’4” externally and 123’3” x 76’2” internally. The mosque features 77 low domes arranged in seven rows of eleven, with an additional dome at each corner, totaling 81 domes. There are four towers. The interior is divided into numerous aisles and bays by slender columns, culminating in many arches that support the roof.
