Matmata - Visitors can explore the intriguing cave houses of Matmata, which showcase remarkable architecture and a traditional way of life. Some of these homes are still occupied, and residents may invite guests to share insights into their lifestyle and the construction of these distinctive dwellings. Inside, one can find wells, earth-dug chambers, and inner courtyards. Matmata gained fame as a filming location for several scenes in the original 1977 Star Wars movie. The cave house where Luke Skywalker lived with Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru was shot in this village. Although the setting has evolved, many Star Wars enthusiasts visit to experience George Lucas’s universe. The house’s interior has been converted into a Star Wars museum, featuring memorabilia and film artifacts.

Ksar Hadada - Ksar Hadada is an ancient fortified Berber village made of raw earth, situated in the Tataouine region of southern Tunisia. This ksar is one of many historical sites in southern Tunisia, renowned for its unique architecture and its role in storing grain in large silo-like structures. The ksar comprises tower-shaped buildings known as ghorfas, which are chambers or cells within the main building’s walls. Ksar Hadada served as a backdrop for scenes in Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace, particularly those set on Tatooine, the desert planet where young Anakin Skywalker resides. The ksar was specifically used to depict the exterior of Anakin’s mother Shmi Skywalker’s house when Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi visit the village seeking parts to repair their ship.
-
Chenini - Perched on a hill, the village of Chenini offers breathtaking views of the surrounding landscapes. Visitors can capture stunning photographs of the cacti, palm groves, and mountains that encircle this ancient village. The desert scenery creates an enchanting atmosphere, with the changing daylight altering the colors of the soil and buildings. A local guide will explain the historical construction and use of these villages over the centuries. Chenini exemplifies Berber architecture and the inhabitants’ adaptation to desert conditions. The guide will also highlight the significance of the ksar fortified village as a refuge and storage center.
Another notable feature of Chenini, like other villages in the area, is its ksar. This ancient citadel served as both a refuge and a storage site for food for the residents.
- Ksar Ouled Soltane - Located about 20 kilometers north of Tataouine, Ksar Ouled Soltane is one of the most renowned sites in southern Tunisia, celebrated for its captivating history and its role in filming scenes from the iconic Star Wars saga. This ksar, with its distinctive architecture and mysterious ambiance, draws not only history and culture enthusiasts but also numerous fans of the film series. In The Phantom Menace, Ksar Ouled Soltane was used to film the exterior of Anakin’s mother Shmi Skywalker’s house. The scene where Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi arrive on Tatooine in search of spaceship parts was filmed at the entrance of one of the ksar’s buildings. The earth and stone towers of Ksar Ouled Soltane closely resemble Shmi Skywalker’s habitat as depicted in the film.
