Exploring the Hidden Gems of Medan: A Day in Brastagi and Lake Toba
Eager to explore the natural beauty and cultural richness of Medan, I embarked on a one-day tour to Brastagi Highland and Lake Toba. Join me as I share my unforgettable journey through lush landscapes, vibrant markets, and traditional villages.
Journey to the Highlands
As a digital nomad, I’m always on the lookout for unique experiences that offer a glimpse into the local culture and natural beauty of a place. When I heard about the Brastagi and Lake Toba Adventure, I knew it was something I had to experience. The day began with an early morning pick-up from my hotel in Medan. The drive to Brastagi Highland was nothing short of breathtaking. As we ascended into the Karo Highlands, the air became cooler, and the landscape transformed into lush greenery dotted with vibrant flowers. Our guide, Pak Eko, shared fascinating stories about the region’s history and the active volcanoes, Sibayak and Sinabung, that loomed in the distance.
Upon reaching Brastagi, we explored the colorful fruit market, a feast for the senses with its array of exotic fruits like passionfruit and mangistan. The market was bustling with locals and tourists alike, all eager to sample the fresh produce. I couldn’t resist trying some of the local fruits, and they were as delicious as they were vibrant.
Cultural Immersion in Dokan Village
After a delightful morning in Brastagi, we made our way to the traditional Karo Batak village of Dokan. This was a highlight for me, as I love immersing myself in local cultures. The village was a fascinating glimpse into the traditional way of life, with its unique architecture and communal living arrangements. We visited one of the traditional houses, where eight families lived under one roof, sharing their space with cattle and pigs below. It was a humbling experience to see how the villagers maintained their traditions in the modern world.
Our guide, Pak Eko, was incredibly knowledgeable and shared insights into the customs and beliefs of the Karo Batak people. It was a reminder of the rich cultural tapestry that exists in this part of the world, and I felt privileged to witness it firsthand.
Awe-Inspiring Views of Lake Toba
The journey continued to the Sipisopiso Waterfall, where we were treated to stunning views of Lake Toba from the hilltop. The waterfall itself was a majestic sight, cascading down into the lake below. The short walk to the viewpoint was well worth it, as the panoramic views of the largest crater lake in Southeast Asia were simply breathtaking.
We then descended to a floating restaurant on Lake Toba for lunch. The drive down was scenic, with the lake’s shimmering waters providing a picturesque backdrop. The meal was a delightful mix of local flavors, and dining on the lake was an experience in itself.
As we made our way back to Medan, I reflected on the day’s adventures. The tour was a perfect blend of natural beauty, cultural immersion, and culinary delights. It was a reminder of why I love traveling and exploring new places. The Brastagi and Lake Toba Adventure is a must-do for anyone visiting Medan, and I can’t recommend it enough. Whether you’re a solo traveler like me or exploring with friends, this tour offers something for everyone.
