- Medellin - Second Part: Playing Tejo
Participants will play Tejo in a pleasant location in El Poblado.
Tejo is Colombia’s national sport, and beyond that, it’s an enjoyable activity that can be easily played by both adults and children.
The drive from Comuna 13 to the Tejo venue takes about 20 minutes.
Upon arrival, instructions on how to play Tejo are provided.
The Graffiti Tour and Tejo experience includes 1 hour of Tejo play.
Additionally, beer, cocktails, or food are offered depending on the number of attendees.
- Medellin - How Should Tejo Be Played?
The setup is straightforward: a wooden box (“pitch”) measuring 35” x 40” is filled with clay. In the center of the pitch is a metal circle.
Four packets of gunpowder (“mechas”) are positioned at the North, South, East, and West points of the metal circle.
A backstop is present, but hitting it voids any points earned.
The objective is to throw a metal puck (“Tejo”) onto one of the mechas, causing it to explode against the metal ring.
Additional points are scored if the Tejo lands in the center of the ring.
There are numerous reasons why this is a must-do in Medellin:
- It’s fun
- It’s authentic
- The atmosphere is fantastic
- It provides a workout for the arms, as participants toss a 1-2 kg stone from 10-18 meters.
After an hour of Tejo, participants return home with smiles and unforgettable memories.
