Situated an hour and a half away from Medellin in eastern Antioquia, is the municipality of Guatape. This vibrant town unfolds a spectrum of colours along its streets, decorated with skirtings that narrate the tales of its inhabitants. The town has won numerous titles like Antioquia’s internal sea, Colombia’s Acapulco, the inland Cartagena, Paisa’s Paradise, Haven of Peace, and the core of East Antioquia. The town was named after the tribal leader Guatapé, from the pre-Columbian era. It has also been known as Ceja de Guatapé. The Guatapé Rock or Piedra del Peñol, a 220-meter high monolith, is a landmark in this region. Made up of quartz, mica, and feldspar, the rock was ascended for the first time on July 16, 1954, by Luis Eduardo Villegas López, and his companions, Ramon Diaz and Pedro Nel Ramírez. Today, the rock is still owned by the Villegas family, and visitors can climb to the peak of this monolith via the 740 steps built into it.
