Additional Information

Guatape, a vibrant municipality nestled in eastern Antioquia, is just a 90-minute journey from Medellin and captivates visitors with its colorful streets, which are lined with decorative skirting boards that narrate the locale’s history and its inhabitants. Dubbed the ‘interior sea of Antioquia,’ ‘Acapulco of Colombia,’ ‘the inland Cartagena,’ ‘Paraíso Paisa,’ ‘Remanso de Paz,’ and the ‘heart of Antioquia’s East,’ this area celebrates the legacy of the tribal leader Cacique Guatapé from the pre-colonial era. It has also been known as ‘Ceja de Guatapé.’ The region is home to the iconic Guatapé Rock or Piedra del Peñol, an imposing 220-meter-high monolith in Guatapé, Antioquia. This geological formation, comprised of quartz, feldspar, and mica, had its first ascent by local Luis Eduardo Villegas López, Ramon Diaz, and Pedro Nel Ramírez on July 16, 1954. The Villegas family continues to have ownership over the rock. Today, visitors can reach its peak by ascending the 740 steps carved into the rockface.

Amazing Day Outside of Medellin - Nelson was one of the best tour guides we have ever had, and the private tour we booked was phenomenal. Starting with a traditional Colombian breakfast included, through the rolling hills outside Medellin we went to La piedra. All along the way Nelson talked about the land, people, culture, history, and everything in between. After ascending the rock, we went to the most beautiful town of Guatapé. There Nelson helped us sample fruits we had never tasted, see the town in the best light, and told us a little history. Then after a delicious Colombian lunch, we took a boat tour of the waters around the area and even got to see some multi million dollar homes. Would highly recommend this tour, and specifically Nelson.

Yes, an unmissable trip from Medellin. - Excellent tour. The views are beautiful, especially from the top of LA PIEDRA, after climbing 750 steps. The service provided by Guide Sergio Buitrago was perfect. The trip through the city of Guatapé is very worth it.

INSANE Value - Marlon was a phenomenal guide. Funny, knowledgeable, and great at speaking English. All of the little shops and cafes in Guatape are a must. El Peñol was neat, too. After seeing how much value was packed into this tour, I couldn’t believe it was priced as low as it is. Highly recommended!

Highly Recommended!! - For reference, Nelson was our tour guide, of which I would highly recommend that you request him if possible. We were picked up promptly at 7:30am. Nelson provided us with history lessons during our ride as well as all the places we visited. He spoke very good English & even taught me some Spanish lol! We had breakfast, climbed the Rock, had lunch & took a boat tour. All of these things were enjoyable. Nelson even offered to stop at the Guatape sign prior to entering to get some good pics YAY!!! All in all, it was a good day that I won’t ever forget. I will cherish the memories. Just an FYI, it’s quite a long day that it filled with lots of walking & stair climbing. That said, I suggest being well rested, wear good walking shoes, bring a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen (be sure to reapply), and most of all, enjoy the tour!

Bad experience with Viator. - The driver’s air conditioning was broken. It was 85 degrees outside. On the way to Guatape we got stuck in the tunnel because of an accident. We of course suffered from the car fumes because we had NO Air Conditioning & had to keep the windows ajar because of the heat. Very dangerous for anyone with breathing issues or heart conditions. This was a private tour. This driver should not have been allowed to pick us up. We hold Viator responsible. Our guide was OK at best; spoken English not great & overall knowledge of the country average. Extremely disappointed in Viator.
