These green spaces offer a respite from the urban hustle and bustle, providing opportunities for residents to connect with nature and each other in the heart of the city.

The importance of Parques del Río extends beyond mere beautification; it symbolizes Medellín’s commitment to sustainable urban development and environmental equilibrium. Moreover, the revitalization of the riverbanks enhances biodiversity and promotes ecological balance, fostering a healthier urban ecosystem for both humans and wildlife.

We’ll have a short walk around the park absorbing the atmosphere.

  • Centro Administrativo La Alpujarra - We’ll head to “CENTER OF MEDELLÍN” just a couple of minutes away, where we’ll see the Alpujarra Administrative Center, a prominent administrative and governmental complex located in the heart of Medellín, Colombia. It serves as a hub for various public institutions, Palaca of Justice, government and municipality offices, making it an essential part of the city’s administrative infrastructure, the complex includes public spaces and monuments that add to its cultural and historical significance. Notably, there is a square named Plaza de la Libertad and the Old Train Station, symbol of the region’s prosperity.

We’ll park here, an begin our walk through the city’s center, we’ll visit these outstanding monuments and understand their background.

  • Parque de la Luz - We’ll cross the street towards PARQUE DE LAS LUCES, is a prominent public space located in the heart of Medellín, a symbol of the city’s transformation and revitalization efforts, showcasing its commitment to urban renewal and social development.

The park holds significant cultural and historical importance for the city. It was built to honor the victims of violence in Medellín and to serve as a space for reflection and remembrance of the city’s main market center.

Beyond its artistic and symbolic elements, Parque de las Luces serves as a vibrant community space where residents gather for cultural events, concerts, strikes and social gatherings.

We’ll take some nice pictures and begin our walk through Carabobo street, a bustling street full of life and commerce.

  • Galería de Arte Palacio Nacional - We’ll also visit “EL PALACIO NACIONAL” just a block away from Plaza Botero, It’s a historic architectural gem located in Medellín. Constructed in the neoclassical style during the early 20th century, the palace stands as a testament to the city’s rich history and cultural heritage. Originally designed to house governmental offices, El Palacio Nacional now serves as a cultural center and museum, showcasing exhibitions that highlight Colombia’s political, social, and artistic evolution.

The palace’s grandiose facade, adorned with imposing columns and intricate detailing, commands attention and evokes a sense of grandeur honoring its historical significance.

  • Iglesia de la Veracruz - We’ll also pass by La Veracruz Church, is a historic landmark dating back to the 16th century, making it one of the city’s oldest churches. Its colonial-style facade and ornate interior reflect a blend of Baroque and Renaissance architectural influences. Dedicated to the Holy Cross, the church continues to serve as a place of worship for the Catholic community, hosting regular religious services and ceremonies.

It’s important to acknowledge that La Veracruz Church and its surrounding area have, at times, faced issues related to prostitution. Due to its location in the downtown area of Medellín, which historically has been a hub for various activities, including commerce and nightlife, and where sex work has occurred in the vicinity of the church. However, it’s essential to approach this topic with sensitivity and understanding, recognizing the complexities involved.

  • Plaza Botero - Our next stop will be the iconic “PLAZA BOTERO”, named after the renowned Colombian artist Fernando Botero, full with Botero’s famous “fatties”, the plaza is famous for being a cultural and artistic hub, featuring a collection of 23 oversized bronze sculptures created by Botero himself, allowing visitors to interact with his legacy in an open and public space. The oversized dimensions of the sculptures just makes you smile.

This plaza’s establishment in 2002 marked a turning point in the city’s efforts to reclaim public spaces and promote social inclusion. By dedicating a prominent public square to Botero’s sculptures, Medellín celebrates its cultural heritage and underscores its commitment to peace, reconciliation, and cultural expression.

That’s why Plaza Botero stands not only as a tribute to Fernando Botero’s artistic legacy but also as a testament to Medellín’s resilience and determination to shape a brighter future through the power of art and community.

  • Parque San Antonio - We’ll walk towards Plaza San Antonio in Medellín, that stands as a central gathering place rich in cultural and historical significance. Located in the heart of downtown, the plaza has been a hub for social interactions and community events for generations. Its notable feature is the collection of sculptures by Fernando Botero.

However, Plaza San Antonio also holds a solemn aspect, serving as a memorial to the victims of a tragic bombing in 1995. Botero’s “Bird of Peace” sculpture are a reminder of the city’s resilience and its ongoing pursuit of peace and reconciliation.

Great family trip to Medellin with Andes Adventure - Family of 5 (parents + 3 teens) took 3 tours in Medellin with AndesAdventure (City Tour, Guatape and Santa Fe de Antioquia) and all 3 tours were great! Andres was very helpful and accomodating in setting up all of the trips (including transport to and from airport) and JuanP and Carlos were great drivers and tour guides. Overall a great experience and we were lucky to not have hit traffic jams in any of the tours b/c they were mid-week. Highly recommend this company, country and city!

Very prompt on time, and he got to know everyone on the trip. 10/10 thanks Daniel
