Discovering the Mystical Moonstones of Meetiyagoda

Our journey began at the Colombo Port Passenger Jetty, where we were greeted by our friendly guide and whisked away in a comfortable private vehicle. The anticipation was palpable as we set off towards Meetiyagoda, a small village renowned for its unique blue moonstones. As a museum curator, I was particularly intrigued by the traditional mining methods still employed here. The miners dig by hand, using coconut wood scaffolding and fern leaves to support the shafts. This sustainable approach not only preserves the environment but also adds a layer of authenticity to the experience.

Upon arrival, we were given a tour of the moonstone mines. Watching the miners at work was a humbling experience. Their skill and dedication were evident as they carefully extracted the moonstone-bearing gravel. The highlight, of course, was witnessing the raw moonstones being winched up the mine shaft. The stones’ ethereal blue hue was mesmerizing, and I couldn’t help but imagine how they would look in a museum exhibit, capturing the imagination of young visitors.

A Spiritual Encounter at Seenigama Muhudu Viharaya

Our next stop was the Seenigama Muhudu Viharaya, a temple situated on a small islet near Hikkaduwa. The temple’s serene setting, just 200 meters offshore, provided a perfect backdrop for reflection and exploration. As we approached the temple, the gentle sound of waves lapping against the shore created a calming atmosphere.

The temple is dedicated to a local deity, Devol, who is revered by both Buddhists and Hindus. The stories of Devol’s protection over fishermen and boats resonated with me, reminding me of the universal themes of faith and community. The temple’s connection to the Ramayana narrative added another layer of cultural richness to our visit. It was fascinating to learn about Sugriva’s campaign against the demon king Ravana, a tale that has been passed down through generations.

Exploring the Historic Galle Fort

Our final destination was the historic Galle Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage site that boasts a rich tapestry of Portuguese and Dutch colonial history. As we wandered through the cobblestone streets, I was struck by the fort’s architectural beauty and the stories embedded within its walls. The restoration efforts by the Sri Lankan government, supported by the Netherlands, have preserved the fort’s heritage while allowing visitors to step back in time.

The fort’s landmarks, such as the Galle Fort Lighthouse and the Dutch Reformed Church, offered a glimpse into the past. Each building told a story of cultural exchange and adaptation, themes that are central to my work as a curator. The fort’s vibrant atmosphere, with its bustling markets and lively cafes, made it a perfect spot for families to explore and learn together.

Reflecting on our journey, I realized that this excursion was more than just a sightseeing tour. It was an opportunity to connect with the rich cultural heritage of Sri Lanka, to learn from its history, and to share these experiences with my family. The Shore Excursion was a perfect blend of education and adventure, leaving us with memories that will last a lifetime.
