Trekking Through Time: A Journey in the Tigray Mountains
Drawn by the allure of ancient churches and breathtaking landscapes, I embarked on a three-day trek through the Tigray mountains. This journey promised not just adventure, but a deep connection with history and nature.
The Call of the Tigray Mountains
As a wildlife photographer with a penchant for adventure, the idea of trekking through the Tigray mountains to explore remote churches was irresistible. The journey began with a drive from Mekele to the Gheralta mountains, a landscape that seemed to whisper ancient secrets. The air was crisp, and the anticipation was palpable as we set off on foot towards the first church, Youhans Maqudi.
The trek was challenging yet invigorating, with each step bringing us closer to the sky-high church. The path was lined with the vibrant flora of the region, and the occasional sighting of wildlife added to the thrill. Upon reaching Youhans Maqudi, the sense of history was overwhelming. The church, carved into the rock, stood as a testament to the devotion and craftsmanship of those who built it centuries ago.
After a moment of reflection, we continued our journey, trekking for several hours to reach the Abune Abraham church. The colorful decorations and the serene atmosphere made it a perfect spot to pause and absorb the beauty of our surroundings. As the sun began to set, we descended to our base camp, our hearts full of the day’s experiences.
Immersed in the Heart of Tigray
The second day began with a hearty breakfast prepared by our skilled cook, fueling us for the trek ahead. The path led us through traditional Tigray villages, where the warmth of the locals was as inviting as the stunning views. The simplicity of life here was a humbling reminder of the importance of sustainable travel and respecting the cultures we encounter.
Our destination was the Mariam Papasite church, another marvel of ancient architecture. The trek was long, but the breathtaking vistas and the occasional glimpse of wildlife kept our spirits high. Upon reaching the church, we were greeted by intricate carvings and a sense of peace that seemed to envelop the entire area.
Camping in the village of Korkor that night was an experience in itself. The stars above were a dazzling display, and the sounds of the night were a soothing symphony. It was a moment to reflect on the journey so far and the incredible landscapes we had traversed.
Reaching New Heights
Our final day in the Tigray mountains was perhaps the most exhilarating. We set off early, eager to reach the highest point of the Gheralta mountains. The ascent was steep, but the reward was a panoramic view that stretched across the four corners of this remarkable region.
After a well-deserved lunch at the summit, we continued our trek to visit the churches of Mariam Korkor and Daniel Korkor. Each church had its own unique charm, and the stories they held were as captivating as the views from their perches.
As we made our way to Hawzien, the realization of the journey’s end began to sink in. The drive back to Mekele was filled with reflections on the incredible experiences and the deep connection I felt with this ancient land. The Tigray mountains had offered not just a trek, but a journey through time, culture, and breathtaking natural beauty. It was an adventure that resonated with my love for sustainable travel and the preservation of history and nature.
