Just overwhelming! - The Van Gogh exhibition was unique, the organizers not only succeeded in animating individual images within themselves, so that movement effects were created in their oversized projection, which were additionally harmonized with music, but also image contents (his room, the coffee house) were realistically recreated, so that one could enter them and view them up close. The highlight of the exhibition would be the VR experience "Finding Vincent". Equipped with a VR headset, you enter buildings and can walk around their rooms, meeting the painter's brother again and again, who gives explanations, you physically perceive the movement in an elevator, on a train and on a carriage ride, although the floor never moves. You can stick your head out of the train window, lean over the railing on a dizzyingly high balcony and look into the depths, and at the end you find Vincent and his brother in a field of flowers.

An unexpected highlight - We happened on The LUME through a set of events and are so glad we did. It’s completely immersive. We just sat and gazed at the art zooming across the screens and were captivated by the music which beautifully matches the art work and story. Some of the quotes were memorable and helped to bring his work to life.

Awesome & Melancholy - It is probably the last exhibition at The Lume before it relocates elsewhere or moves on to another State or overseas which is tragic. So perhaps it is fitting that the ultimate exhibition is about Van Gogh's short & tragic life! Vincent's art comes to live larger than his life & you get to know all about him with excellent visual & musical storytelling in a way you can in the 21st century. It is smaller in scale (in terms of exhibits) to the previous Da Vinci offering but just as immersive & absorbing. The VR at extra cost is a must - takes you into Vincent's world via his artwork. Cafe Terrace fare is reasonably priced & you can view the projections & chill. Try your hand at emulating Van Gogh in the drawing room & definitely take your time in the special exhibition & Infinity rooms. Allow 2 hours at least as Van Gogh's projections run in a 45 min loop - yes, I timed it!

Immerse yourself in this amazing light and sound exhibition - Van Gogh’s art is well known and yet his work seems so simple when compared to say, Da Vinci or Rembrandt. And that’s why I’m not an art historian or gallery curator. That doesn’t mean however, I can’t appreciate this Dutch master’s work and on the scale of Lume’s immersive exhibition, this retrospective covering his life is all encompassing. You’ll instantly recognise The Starry Night, Self Portraits or the Sunflowers, but never in such a captivating way. The rotating 30 minute experience features pictures, videos, lights, projections, touch, and sound. No time limits here so just soak it up as the walls and floor come alive, there is a lot to take in. If you can score one of the laid down chairs - go for it. As a Senior, it still cost me $39.90 but I suggest you take your time and see the entire exhibition from all angles and heights. It’s a high-tech, multi-sensory experience. I passed on the VR experience, always makes me feel seasick wearing the glasses. As a lover of classical music, I recognised many of the pieces that accompanied the works. A few even had me tear up as I was reading about Van Gogh’s mental health issues. Adding to the experience is the poignant themed Café Terrace 1888, which can be found right inside the main gallery space. Indulge your senses with small bites, light meals, share plates, children’s dishes, and rich desserts as well as a comprehensive selection of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages.  Undertake a drawing class to replicate Van Gogh’s bedroom in Arles or your version of A Starry Night. In all, I was quite bewitched by my afternoon, even coming away with my sketchy version of a Starry Night. #tripadvisor #tripadvisorreview #tripadvisorreviewer #googlelocalguide #googlelicalguides #letsguide #thewanderingreviewer @vangoghmuseum @restaurant_lume @thelumemelbourne #vangoghlume

Vincent Van Gogh..... - A relaxing visual treat with music to sit back and take in. My partner is generally not into artwork but thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The Virtual Reality room was fantastic...make sure you add this on for your visit. Shame The Lume is closing in 2026. Make sure you check out Van Gogh if you can.

Good experience - I enjoyed the tranquility of the Van Gogh at the Lume and I loved the drawing lessons - wonderful touch. I have seen an immersive Klimt light exhibit similar to this before in Amsterdam and it was a lot more playful and interesting. The quality of sound and the places to relax were a standout at the LUME. The non-Van Gogh digital art was a little unnecessary. Our group enjoyed this experience.
