  Taman Ayun Temple serves as the Mother Temple (Paibon) for the Mengwi Kingdom. It was constructed by the Mengwi King, I Gusti Agung Putu, in the Javanese year 1556 (1634 AD). Initially, I Gusti Agung Putu established a temple north of Mengwi village to honor his ancestors, naming it Genter Park. As Mengwi expanded into a major kingdom, he relocated Genter Park eastward and enlarged the temple complex. The expanded temple was officially named Taman Ayun Temple on Kliwon Tuesday - Medangsia, the fourth month of the Javanese year 1556. To this day, a piodalan (ceremony) is held every Kliwon Tuesday of wuku Medangsia in the Javanese calendar (Saka) to commemorate the temple’s anniversary.
