Conquering Mount Meru: A Thrilling Trek Through Tanzania’s Wild Heart
Drawn by the call of adventure and the promise of breathtaking landscapes, I embarked on a thrilling 4-day trek up Mount Meru, Tanzania’s second-highest peak. Join me as I recount the journey through diverse wildlife and stunning vistas.
The Call of the Wild: Setting Out on Mount Meru
As a wildlife photographer with a deep-seated love for Africa, the allure of Mount Meru was irresistible. Nestled in the heart of Arusha National Park, this majestic peak stands as Tanzania’s second-highest mountain and an active volcano. The thought of trekking through its diverse landscapes, teeming with wildlife, was enough to set my adventurous spirit alight.
The journey began with an early morning drive from Arusha to the Momella Gate. The anticipation was palpable as our group, accompanied by an armed ranger, set off on the trail. The first day’s hike was akin to a walking safari, with sightings of giraffes, zebras, and buffalo grazing in the distance. The trail meandered through lush forests and across the Ngarenanyuki River, leading us to a breathtaking waterfall at the base of the mountain. As the sun dipped below the horizon, we arrived at Miriakamba Hut, where a warm meal and the promise of a stunning sunset awaited us.
Ascending the Heights: From Miriakamba to Saddle Hut
The second day of the trek was a test of endurance and spirit. After a hearty breakfast, we embarked on a steep ascent along the ridge of the saddle. The trail offered panoramic views of the Meru Crater and the Ash Tray, a stark reminder of the mountain’s volcanic past. The air was crisp and filled with the sounds of nature, a symphony that accompanied us as we climbed higher.
Upon reaching Saddle Hut, we had the option to hike Little Mount Meru, a perfect opportunity for acclimatization. The views from this vantage point were nothing short of spectacular, with the landscape stretching out in all directions. As night fell, we retired early, knowing that the summit attempt awaited us in the early hours of the morning.
The Summit: A Sunrise to Remember
The final push to the summit began in the dead of night. Guided by the light of our headlamps, we navigated the steep trail to Rhino Point and Cobra Point. The climb was challenging, with the rocky ridge demanding every ounce of focus and determination. But as we reached the summit of Mount Meru at sunrise, the reward was beyond words.
The view from the top was a breathtaking panorama of the Ash Tray and the distant silhouette of Mount Kilimanjaro. It was a moment of pure exhilaration, a testament to the power of nature and the spirit of adventure. After soaking in the views, we began our descent, retracing our steps to Saddle Hut and then to Miriakamba Hut for a well-deserved rest.
The trek down to the Momella Gate was a reflective journey, a chance to savor the memories of an unforgettable adventure. As we made our way back to Arusha, I couldn’t help but feel a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience the wild beauty of Mount Meru. This trek was not just a journey through a stunning landscape, but a reminder of the importance of preserving these natural wonders for future generations.
