ITINERARY FOR THE WEEKEND OF FEBRUARY 8 - FEBRUARY 9, 2025

Merzouga’s February Desert Escape: A Weekend of Cultural Immersion and Adventure

Experience the thrill of Merzouga’s desert escape this February, where clear skies and cool temperatures set the stage for a weekend of cultural immersion and adventure. From camel treks across golden dunes to exploring the rich Berber culture, this journey promises unforgettable memories.

Embrace the Desert’s Majesty: Day One in Merzouga

As the sun rises over the golden sands of Merzouga, the clear skies and mild temperatures create the perfect backdrop for a day of exploration and adventure. With the UV index reaching a high of 7, don’t forget your sunscreen as you embark on a journey that promises both thrill and cultural immersion.

Start your day with the Atlas Mountains Adventure, where you’ll traverse the majestic Middle Atlas Mountains. This morning adventure, available from 7:00 AM, takes you through the enchanting cedar forests near Azrou, where you might encounter the playful Barbary apes. As you wind through the rugged rock walls and forested peaks, the breathtaking views will leave you in awe. The journey continues to the significant town of Rissani, on the edge of the Sahara, where the magical Erg Chebbi sand dunes await your arrival.

In the afternoon, prepare for an unforgettable experience with the Desert Stay and Camel Trek. As the sun begins its descent, embark on a camel trek across the stunning dunes. Feel the thrill of sandboarding down the slopes and capture the mesmerizing sunset over the desert. As night falls, the serene environment of the desert camp welcomes you with traditional Berber hospitality. Enjoy a night under the starlit sky, accompanied by the soothing sounds of Berber music and a delicious Moroccan dinner.

“The best experience - I had been to the Sahara desert many times and have the opportunity to stay in several desert camps. They all say that they are a luxury camp and I agreed with them because the entire tented camp in the desert has almost the same format and decoration. But the only thing that makes them different from each other is the location. In my book, the best location for desert camping is that the camp should be surrounded by a sand dune. Then you can climb to the top and have a beautiful view of the camp. It also makes your life much easier when you want to photograph a sunrise or sunset. Luxury Camp has it all. The location is great, the service is great with very friendly staff. There is a WiFi for you at the campsite. If you need some adventure, just ask the staff to find you some exciting activities besides camel raiding, like sandboarding or an ATV ride. Check out this place if you need something special for your vacation. We recommend this luxury camp.” - Reviewed at 2024-08-03

A Cultural Tapestry: Day Two in Merzouga

Awake to the gentle hues of dawn over the sand dunes, a sight that promises to be etched in your memory forever. The partly cloudy skies add a touch of drama to the landscape, making it a perfect day for cultural exploration and adventure.

Begin your morning with a sunrise camel trek back to Merzouga, where the shifting shadows of the dunes create a mesmerizing spectacle. After a hearty breakfast, take some time to explore the local Berber culture. Visit the nearby villages and immerse yourself in the rich traditions and crafts that define this unique region.

In the afternoon, continue your adventure with the Atlas Mountains Adventure. This time, choose your own desert adventure, whether it’s a walk through the vast dunes of Erg Chebbi or a refreshing swim in the hotel pool. As dusk approaches, embark on another camel trek, this time into the glorious sunset, arriving at a traditional Berber desert camp. Here, you’ll enjoy an authentic Moroccan meal, stargaze, and listen to the soothing sounds of traditional Berber music.

“Amazing Desert Tour, and helpful operator given itinerary differed from description - The desert tour was truly a once in a lifetime experience - the tents were very nice (private bathroom/shower), and the food was a pleasant surprise. I would highly recommend the ATV in the desert, even though it’s an extra 50 euro - that was the highlight of our trip. As a heads up, the itinerary is different than the description: you make several stops, including the Atlas film studio and Ourzazate, which we hadn’t wanted. That said, when we reached out to our operator, he graciously provided us private transport so we could get to Marrakech ASAP and maximize our stay there. it’s on you to communicate with the tour provider, but if you reach out they are happy to accommodate you.” - Reviewed at 2024-05-23

The Final Adventure: Departure from Merzouga

As your weekend in Merzouga draws to a close, take a moment to reflect on the incredible experiences and memories you’ve created. The cool temperatures and excellent visibility make it an ideal day for a final exploration of the desert landscape.

Consider a morning hike to capture the last glimpses of the breathtaking scenery. The towering dunes and vast open spaces offer endless opportunities for photography and quiet contemplation. As you prepare to depart, the sense of adventure and cultural immersion will linger, leaving you with a deep appreciation for the beauty and diversity of Merzouga.

Whether you’re heading to Marrakech or returning to Fes, the journey through the Atlas Mountains will be a fitting conclusion to your desert escape. The memories of camel treks, Berber music, and the stunning desert landscape will stay with you long after you’ve left the sands of Merzouga behind.
