In the western province of Messinia, where the Ionian Sea meets the Peloponnese coast, we trek along the hill of Palaiokastro, the renowned beach of Voidokilia, and the Yalova lagoon, the southern extreme point for flying birds migrating between Europe and Africa. This largest wetland in the south of Greece, incorporated into the Natura 2000 conservation program, serves as a refuge for transient wild birds we may get to observe. Within this welcoming and protected ecosystem, the threatened African chameleon resides, and a host of birds such as herons, kestrels, Aegean seagulls, flamingos, ospreys, royal eagles, and other migratory and native species find sanctuary.
