Additional Information

Immerse yourself in the history and culture of Messina, one of Sicily’s major cities, along with its historic center. Situated in the northeast of the island, the downtown area was devastated by the earthquake that occurred on December 28, 1908. The Messina Regional Museum safeguards original adornments and valuable works of art that were salvaged from the ruins of the old city. Exhibits include mosaics, paintings, sculptures, statues, and intricately decorated funerary monuments. The museum’s crowning glories are undoubtedly the works of art by Antonello da Messina, Montorsoli, and Caravaggio, spanning the 15th to 17th centuries. Moreover, the archaeological display offers insight into Messina’s past, tracing its history from its Greek colonial origins (Zancle) to its time as part of the Roman Empire. Don’t overlook the hypogeum complex of the Monastery of Saint Salvatore dei Greci.

Excellent Tour - Our tour guide was Chiara. She was fantastic. She explained the art with so much passion. She was very accommodating of what we wanted to do with the extra time we had and made some recommendations of other things to see and do.

Best Tour Of Our Cruise - We were met right off our cruise ship. We joined our guide, Maria Laura, and jumped into the van with another couple from our ship. Maria Laura took us to many stops in the city, telling us the history, and interesting facts about Messina. One stop was for lunch, where I tried the local calzone. And another stop was at the bakery for cannnoli. After touring the city, we traveled outside the city, where Maria took us to the lakes. Our next stop was to the museum, where Maria gave us A personal guide there. Lastly, we went to Messina Cathedral and the Astronomical Clock to finish our tour. With plenty of time before our ships departure, we still had time to shop around the drop off at the port. Just A really pleasant day. We highly recommend this tour with Maria Laura, who answered all of our question. She really made the tour enjoyable.
