The weather on November 23rd, with its cool and mostly cloudy skies, sets a perfect backdrop for a leisurely exploration of the city’s indoor treasures and a gentle stroll through its historic streets.
Begin your day with a visit to the Basilica of Saint Nicholas, where the echoes of centuries-old hymns resonate through the hallowed halls. The basilica, a masterpiece of Romanesque architecture, stands as a testament to Bari’s spiritual heritage. As you wander through the narrow alleys of Bari Vecchia, the old town, the aroma of freshly baked focaccia mingles with the salty sea breeze, creating an intoxicating blend that lures you further into the heart of the city.
In the afternoon, as the skies begin to clear, consider embarking on a Horseback Adventure through the Apulian countryside. This enchanting tour, available from 4:30 PM to 7:30 PM, offers a unique opportunity to experience the region’s natural beauty. As you ride through olive groves and past historic caves, the distant view of the sea provides a serene backdrop to your journey. The tour concludes with a charming horse-drawn carriage ride, a nod to the romantic allure of slow travel.
A Day of Discovery in Alta Murgia
On November 24th, the weather takes a delightful turn, offering clear skies and mild temperatures that beckon you to explore the great outdoors. The morning is an ideal time to venture into the Alta Murgia National Park for a Morning Excursion to the Pulo di Altamura. This excursion, from 6:00 AM to 9:00 AM, promises a journey through a landscape steeped in history and natural wonder.
As you traverse the park’s expansive fields and rocky pastures, the scent of wild thyme and mint fills the air, invigorating your senses. The highlight of the tour is the Pulo di Altamura, a magnificent karst sinkhole that has captivated visitors for centuries. Here, you’ll explore ancient caves and hermitages, remnants of a time when this land was a spiritual haven. The panoramic views from the octagonal stone crown atop the hill offer a breathtaking vista of the surrounding countryside.
After the excursion, a visit to the historic center of Altamura is a must. Indulge in the renowned Altamura bread, a culinary delight that has been savored since the Middle Ages. As you savor each bite, the flavors transport you back in time, evoking a sense of nostalgia for the simple pleasures of life.
“Chicken at sunset - I did this excursion because although I am from Puglia, I had never been to Pulo di Altamura and after this tour I returned many times. Guide Alessandro guided us on an untouristy and wonderful path, which makes you walk the whole pulo passing through several sinkholes that leave you breathless; with the binoculars made available we saw different species of birds of prey that nest in different places and several spontaneous plants, aromatic and otherwise, with an intoxicating scent. A complete excursion of fauna and flora, highly recommended.” - Reviewed on 2024-07-22
