Skip the town - do the full Etna AWD experience! - I'm glad we decided to do the full AWD experience (and skip Taormina). The drive from the cruise port in Messina to the northern base camp of Mt. Etna was almost 2 hours long. After transferring to a special off-road bus, it took us about 45 minutes (including a stop midway to get off and view a lateral crater) to get to the 2,850 m top (not the highest point on Etna and not near the active craters) where the observatory is also located. After spending time admiring the desolate beauty of the area, we drove back down and again stopped midway to hike to a lateral crater. The ride is bumpy - like riding a bucking bull or a broken roller coaster - but it was part of the fun! We had a volcanologist along the ride but we also had our tour operator driver, Andrea, and guide, Carmelo, with us who were very nice and accommodating. We got back to our ship with 1.5 hrs to spare.
