The journey to the summit area, guided by legally authorized mountain or volcanological experts, begins at 1,800 meters (Piano Provenzana) and follows a picturesque route through ancient craters and recent lava flows, reaching an elevation of approximately 3,000 meters.

The excursion begins at Etna Nord, the tourist station of Piano Provenzana at an altitude of 1,800 meters, and follows a scenic route through ancient craters and recent lava flows. The first stop is at the ruins of the “Le Betulle” hotel, the only structure remaining from those destroyed by the 2002 lava flow. The next stage involves an easy trek to the distinctive button craters from the eruption on October 27, 2002. From approximately 2,050 meters, participants can view the lava flow that devastated Piano Provenzana. The journey continues with a return to the vehicles and a stop at 2,380 meters to explore the large extinct craters “Umberto and Margherita” on a short trek. The next step involves traveling by 4x4 bus to the Volcanological Observatory, followed by a brief trek to the top of the Pizzi Deneri promontory at 3,000 meters, where the Summit Craters can be safely observed. The excursion concludes with a sunset viewing from the Volcanological Observatory before returning to Piano Provenzana.
