Anacapri - Located on the island of Capri, it stands on the northern side of Mount Solaro (which, at 589 m, is the highest peak on the island); a chairlift connects the town to the summit of the mountain, from where the view extends over a vast panorama, from the Gulf of Naples to the Gulf of Salerno.
Free time to visit Villa S. Michele or Monte Solaro via chairlift (ticket excluded). -
Villa San Michele - Villa San Michele stands on the same site where, in Roman times, there was one of the twelve Capri villas built by the emperor Tiberius, who governed the Empire from Capri from 27 to 37 AD. At the beginning of the 19th century, the archaeologist Giuseppe Feola, in his report on the current state of the Augusto-Tiberian ruins on the island of Capri, mentions various finds, mosaic floors and marble slabs, brought to light in this exact location, which at the time was incorporated in the garden of the Neapolitan prince Gallo.
In 1895 the Swedish doctor Axel Munthe fell in love with the site, which also contained the remains of an ancient 10th century chapel dedicated to Saint Michael, and wanted to purchase it at all costs. While carrying out the restoration work, he discovered the presence of the surviving remains of the ancient Roman villa in the vineyard adjacent to the ruin, including a segment of masonry in opus reticulatum and two small frescoed and paved rooms. The house was adorned with several other archaeological finds. -
Giardini di Augusto - In the early afternoon visit Capri with the gardens of Augustus.
The Gardens of Augustus, initially known as the Krupp Gardens, are a city park in Capri.
They were started by Friedrich Alfred Krupp, the German steel industrialist who purchased some properties on the island at the beginning of the 20th century, with the intention - which later did not materialise - of building a villa there. Known as Krupp Gardens until 1918, after the First World War they were renamed Augustus Gardens by the municipal administration, in honor of the first Roman emperor.
They constitute a true botanical garden which houses various specimens of the island’s flora, with ornamental and non-ornamental plants. The botanical beauties are combined with a very broad panorama of the main landscape beauties of Capri. From them, in fact, you can get a 180 degree overview of the island of Capri, with glimpses of Mount Solaro, the bay of Marina Piccola, Via Krupp and the famous stacks.
- Blue Grotto - The Blue Grotto is a karst cavity that opens on the north-western side of the island of Capri. Administratively it belongs to the municipality of Anacapri, in the metropolitan city of Naples.
Prestigious nymphaeum from the Roman age, after a long decline the cave became known starting from 1826, when it was visited by the German artist August Kopisch.
The Blue Grotto has an opening partially submerged by the sea, from which external light filters which - in this way - creates an intense shade of blue, which represents the peculiar characteristic of the cave.
The entrance is a fissure in the rock two meters high and equally long, which is - when the sea is not rough - just one meter above sea level. Consequently, when entering the cavity, you have to lie down on the boat which requires the presence of an experienced boatman. Having abandoned the oars, he pushes the boat by holding on to an iron chain which is walled up at the entrance.
