This expedition will provide a snapshot of this city’s rich diversity in three distinct zones including: a scenic drive along the waterfront to witness the expansive bay from Posillipo and Mergellina; a leisurely walk through the luxuriant monumental district covering Plebiscito square, the Royal Palace, and the San Carlo Theater; a journey along Spaccanapoli, the ancient Greek-origin district. The ancient Greek philosopher, Homer, in his epic Odyssey, narrates the journey of Ulysses to the Italian shores. Upon nearing these waters, he encountered the mermaids who tried to lure the seafarers with their bewitching songs, intending to kill them later. Ulysses, having been forewarned by the enchantress Circe, safeguarded his crewmen with wax earplugs and bound himself to the ship’s mast, enabling him to withstand the charm of the sea beings: one of whom, the mermaid Parthenope made her home on the small islet of Megaride, upon which stands the Castle dell’Ovo. This is the origin of Napoli’s alternate name, Partenope.
