Highlights
  • Chapultepec Castle - The National Museum of History is the venue that keeps the memory of the history of Mexico, from the conquest of Tenochtitlan, in 1521, to the Mexican Revolution, in the second decade of the 20th century. Its exhibition rooms show us a diversity of historical testimonies -such as paintings, flags, documents, weapons, furniture and clothing- that have managed to be preserved, and which are representative of four centuries of our country’s history.

The museum is located in the Chapultepec Castle, a historic building of high symbolic value for Mexicans, whose construction began in 1785 during the government of the viceroy of New Spain, Bernardo de Gálvez. Originally, it was created as a rest house, however, over time, it was adapted to its different uses: it was a military college, imperial residence with Maximiliano and Carlota (1864-1867), presidential residence and, since 1939, it is the headquarters of the National Museum of History.

Additional Information

The National Museum of History serves as a custodian for Mexico’s historical narrative, spanning from the fall of Tenochtitlan in 1521 up to the events of the Mexican Revolution in the early 1900s. Its galleries display a myriad of preserved historical artifacts including artwork, banners, manuscripts, weaponry, furnishings, and attire, encapsulating four hundred years of the nation’s past.

Situated within the walls of Chapultepec Castle, an edifice deeply ingrained in the Mexican psyche, the museum’s origins trace back to 1785 under the reign of the then viceroy of New Spain, Bernardo de Gálvez. Initially conceived as a summer retreat, the castle has undergone numerous transformations, having served as a military academy, the home of emperors Maximilian I and Charlotte of Mexico, a presidential abode, and since 1939, the permanent base for the National Museum of History.

Beautiful Historic Castle - It was wonderful. Full of History. I felt I was taken to the past. I love the jewels and artifacts. It was easy to view all the pictures of the people involved and live in this huge castle. I will recommend it to friends and family. The garden was blooming and good place to view the city. A great place for pictures and memories.

Disappointed no tour - Chapultepec never fails to be beautiful. I was very disappointed that there was no tour with the ticket. It was more expensive than the ticket booth, I Could have just purchased at the ticket booth and saved money. I have booked a ton of tickets through This app. This is the first time I have been disappointed.

The info about the ticket purchase was incomplete. - There was no age info about seniors and we got in FREE. So I wasted the money for tickets. The Castle was great and we enjoyed it, but needed that information.

This is a scam. Do not buy. - This is a scam. We received the tickets like we were supposed to. TripAdvisor did not refund us even knowing that it’s a scam as several others have commented.

Don't use Viajes Tulum - Viajes Tulum (the company I bought my entrance tickets through), were supposed to send my entrance tickets prior to the day by email, sms and whatsapp BUT they did not do that. On the morning I left my hotel, there was still nothing so I went to the Castle and paid another entrance fee only to find an email from the tour operator sent about 9am, (no sms or whatsapp), when I returned to my hotel that night. I had no internet access and even if I did, I would not have checked my emails as I was out and about. The ticket should have arrived the day before at the very least. I wrote to them asking for a refund but have not heard back. Do not use this tour operator to get your tickets. I really enjoyed visiting the castle and it was well worth the long uphill walk in the hot sun.

Don't get suckered - We bought two tickets and when we got to the ticket window (as we were instructed by Viator) there was no one to help us with converted our voucher that we paid for to a real ticket. What a complete and total ripoff. We paid the $$ for nothing. We contacted Viator but no reply

Good experience but improper charge - They charge for the entrance of small children when the tickets are free! A scam since it is not necessary to do it and they charge you

Don’t waste your time with this 3rd party Vendor - Don’t get me wrong, the Castle itself is a definite must see but you are better off buying tickets at the kiosk or directly through the museum at 90 pesos for entry. I only received a voucher via email with no valid QR code tickets needed for entry, the box office is unable to help if since this is a 3rd party service, I then proceeded to attempt to get a valid QR code from this service was hung up on initially and then upon providing my reference number received my valid tickets with QR, this took about 40minutes, save yourself the trouble and money buy direct from El Castillo de Chapultepec.
