- University City - The National Autonomous University of Mexico boasts around 110 murals, with eight being particularly remarkable. This site was designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2007 and was inaugurated in 1952.
The facades of the Rector’s Tower, the Central Library, and the Olympic University Stadium showcase the impressive works of the three greats of Mexican muralism: David Alfaro Siqueiros, Juan O’Gorman, and Diego Rivera, each with unique compositions, perspectives, reliefs, and materials.
The largest mural ever, the crown jewel, created by architect and painter Juan O’Gorman, adorns the Central Library; its four sides, spanning four thousand square meters, are entirely covered with natural stones, featuring ten thousand colors and weather-resistant materials from all over the country.
- Coyoacan - Coyoacán means “place of those who have or possess coyotes,” derived from three Nahuatl words: coyotl (coyote), hua (possession), and can (place). The Center of Coyoacán has long been a gathering place and haven for artists, philosophers, writers, and aristocrats. Its streets are rich with stories, intertwined with the history of Mexico City, the capital of this beautiful country.
- Parroquia San Juan Bautista - Just eight years after the conquest, Hernán Cortés generously granted a sizable plot of land to a group of Franciscan friars. According to chronicler Salvador Novo, this property featured a cement floor, a red quarry facade, walls of carved volcanic stone, and even a shrine adorned with gold plate.
- Coyoacan Market - The Coyoacán Market is a must-visit spot in Coyoacán.
Located a short walk from the Frida Kahlo or Leon Trotsky museums, it is a vibrant and excellent place to dine. Visitors often end up at the Coyoacán Market after exploring one of the museums, especially on weekends when downtown Coyoacán is bustling with strollers and their guests.
- Museo Frida Kahlo - Frida Kahlo spent most of her life here, initially with her family and later with Diego Rivera. The magnetism of both painters attracted notable national and international figures to this place.
Frida and Diego intended to leave their home as a museum for all Mexicans to enjoy. After Frida’s passing, their friend, museographer and poet Carlos Pellicer, curated the museum’s layout. Since its opening in July 1958, the Casa Azul and its gardens have displayed personal items and artworks by both artists, popular art, pre-Columbian sculptures, photographs, documents, books, and furniture that inspired Frida’s creativity.
- Centro Historico - As the experience concludes, it’s time to return to the starting point in downtown Mexico City. Take a moment to relax, rest, and reflect on what this tour has imparted to you.
