A must see! - We were hesitant to book the excursion because of the long drive, but it was well worth it. The hot springs ended up being our favourite excursion from Mexico City. In addition to the pools on the side of the mountain, there is also a waterfall, tunnel/cave system, and hot water river that you get to explore.

You'll be tired but not sorry - once in a lifetime experience - We started the tour from Hostel Amigo at 6am. The trip to the springs was about 4 hours with a 30 min stop for breakfast. The breakfast stop is excellent - traditional Mexican Barbacoa - but there is a small bakery across the road if you want pastry and an OXXO (basically a 7/11) if you want snacks or bottled water etc or a gas station cappuccino. You can also buy Aqua shoes and a plastic cell phone cover at this stop (or swimwear/towels etc). We had a full six hours at the springs. We started at the caves and river and then drove 10 mins to the pools and spent the rest of the time there. My 8 year old daughter loved all of it and tried to swim in every pool/cave pool. We left the springs at 330p with a 30 min stop for food on the way home - this stop was at Pasteko which is the McDonalds of Empanada in Mexico - we just got snacks from the gas station next door. The area where the Springs is located is magnificent - mountainous desert with clear clean water running through the valley. The day is very long but worth it - you'll be tired but not sorry. Our guides were great, very organized and clear with directions and answers to questions.

Visit to Tolantongo - It was an amazing experience, the place is pretty nice. The guide and driver (Rodrigo and Quique de Amigo Tours) super attentive at all times, any doubts you had were resolved kindly, with a lot of knowledge of the area. It's totally worth it

Grutas Tolantongo Experience - Ad listed said small private tour, however there was about 20 of us in our group, with no provided tour from our tour guide. We got to the park and he left us on our own. Felt very unorganized. In addition, the tour was supposed to return for 6pm, and we did not get back until 3 hours later at 9pm. The driver was reckless, running through speed bumps, making for a very nauseous ride. Overall the experience was okay, but would not recommend.

The tour guides were... - The tour guides were great and Tolantongo is amazing but I would not book this experience again because it was so uncomfortable ALL day. The van was soooo bumpy and rough. Seats were uncomfortable too. Every place we stopped along the way there and back was sooooo gross. Would not recommend.
