Great tour for a family - Our family of five booked a fast track guided two hour tour and we loved it! The tour guide was Chiara and she was a perfect mix of knowledgeable and entertaining. She was great with the kids on the tour as well as the adults.
The tour started and ended on time which was important because we had a tight window.
Chiara even took extra care to help an injured person in our group get down from the rooftop using the elevator which is different from what the rest of the group does taking the stairs.
I really don’t think I would have gotten much out of just visiting the duomo without a tour.

Visiting the Duomo Cathedral with My Family - Our family visit to the Duomo Cathedral in Milan was a captivating and enriching experience, combining architectural grandeur, historical intrigue, and breathtaking views. Here’s a detailed review of our visit to this iconic landmark.
Arrival and First Impressions
As we arrived at the Piazza del Duomo, the sight of the cathedral was mesmerizing. The Gothic façade, adorned with intricate carvings and statues, immediately drew us in. The sheer size and detailed workmanship were awe-inspiring. The square itself was bustling with life, adding to the anticipation.
Entering the Duomo
Entering the cathedral, we were struck by the vastness of the interior. The high ceilings, massive columns, and intricate stained glass windows created a sense of reverence and wonder. The light streaming through the windows painted the interior with vibrant colors, enhancing the serene atmosphere.
Exploring the Interior
The Nave and Altars
Walking through the nave, we admired the numerous altars, each with unique sculptures and artwork. The main altar, with its elaborate bronze details, was particularly impressive. The Great Organ, one of the largest in Italy, was another highlight. Although we didn’t hear it played, its presence added to the cathedral's grandeur.
The Crypt and Treasury
We also explored the crypt, which houses the tomb of Saint Charles Borromeo, a significant figure in the Catholic Church. The treasury, filled with religious artifacts, provided a glimpse into the cathedral’s rich history. The children were fascinated by the gold and silver chalices, ancient manuscripts, and intricately decorated vestments.
The Rooftop Terraces
The rooftop visit was the highlight of our trip. We opted for the elevator, which was convenient for the children and older family members. Once on the terraces, the panoramic views of Milan were breathtaking. We walked among the spires and statues, appreciating the craftsmanship up close. The sight of the golden Madonnina, the statue of the Virgin Mary, shining atop the cathedral was particularly memorable.
Historical Context
The guided tour we took provided valuable insights into the cathedral’s history and architectural details. Learning about the centuries-long construction process and the various architects and artists involved gave us a deeper appreciation of the Duomo’s complexity and beauty.
Family-Friendly Features
The Duomo was surprisingly family-friendly. The staff were accommodating, and there were plenty of informative plaques and displays at a level accessible to younger visitors. The guided tour included interesting anecdotes and historical facts that kept the children engaged. The rooftop terraces were safely enclosed, allowing us to enjoy the views without worry.
Practical Tips
Timing: We visited early in the morning to avoid the crowds, which made our experience more pleasant.
Tickets: Purchasing tickets online in advance saved us time and allowed us to choose a convenient time slot.
Attire: Modest clothing is required to enter the cathedral, so we made sure to dress appropriately.
Conclusion
Visiting the Duomo Cathedral was a memorable experience for our family. The blend of stunning architecture, historical significance, and the sheer beauty of the views from the rooftop made it an enriching outing. Whether you are a history enthusiast, an art lover, or simply looking for an awe-inspiring experience in Milan, the Duomo offers something for everyone. Our family left with a deeper appreciation of this magnificent structure and its place in history, making it a highlight of our trip to Milan.

Skinned Alive - There’s an unusual statue, in the very back of the cathedral, of a skinned St. Bartholomew. It’s a must see.
Unfortunately, after researching, there is no substantial evidence about his life and death, and even yet another example of an inconsistency amongst the gospels.
It seems he may not have been skinned, but rather crucified. It also seems, according to the gospel of John, he must have had another name of Nathaniel. (biblical experts still debate this).
I have attached a photo.

Stunning but lots of scaffolding! - Absolutely stunning Cathedral, however there is currently lots of scaffolding and building work in process which limits the views and experience. Not sure how long the building work is due to last.
