Pedaling Through Time: An E-Bike Adventure on Kea’s Ancient Trails
Drawn by the promise of exploring Kea’s hidden gems, I embarked on an e-bike tour that promised a taste of local delicacies and a journey through time. Join me as I recount this unforgettable adventure.
A Journey Through Time and Taste
The island of Kea, with its rugged landscapes and ancient trails, beckoned me with a promise of discovery. As someone who has spent years navigating the icy expanses of the Arctic, the idea of exploring a sun-drenched island on an e-bike was a stark contrast to my usual adventures. Yet, the allure of tasting local delicacies and uncovering traditional products was irresistible. I found myself in the company of Alexis and Andreas, two passionate guides who have dedicated themselves to revealing the hidden gems of Kea to the world.
Our journey began in Mylopotamos, a quaint village that seemed untouched by time. The e-bikes, sturdy and reliable, were our chariots for the day. As we pedaled through the ancient stone-paved trails, the landscape unfolded like a tapestry of history and culture. The Folklore Museum of Mylopotamos was our first stop, where the past whispered through artifacts and stories. Among the orange trees in the museum’s garden, we indulged in local delicacies like loza and kopanisti, each bite a testament to the island’s rich culinary heritage.
The Heart of Kea
Leaving Mylopotamos, we ventured towards Ioulida, the Hora of the island. The route, a blend of on-road and dirt paths, challenged our endurance but rewarded us with breathtaking views. The famous stone Lion of Kea stood as a silent guardian, its presence a reminder of the island’s ancient roots. Alexis, with his deep knowledge of Kea’s history, painted vivid pictures of the past, making each stop along the way a lesson in time travel.
Our journey took us to Kastri, a small monastery nestled in the northeast of Kea. The serenity of the place was palpable, a stark contrast to the harsh environments I was accustomed to. The lighthouse of Agios Nikolaos, perched on the east side of the port, offered panoramic views that were nothing short of awe-inspiring. It was here that I felt the island’s heartbeat, a rhythm that resonated with the adventurer in me.
A Taste of Tradition
As we made our way back to Mylopotamos, the final leg of our journey led us to Flea, the most prolific natural water spring on the island. The cool, refreshing water was a welcome respite from the day’s exertions. Our tour concluded with a visit to “Aristaios,” where we discovered the culture and life of “Xotaris” through their traditional products. The handmade “Pasteli” and “Arbaroriza” liqueur were the perfect endnotes to a symphony of flavors that had played throughout the day.
Reflecting on the experience, I realized that this tour was more than just a ride through Kea’s landscapes. It was a journey into the heart of the island, a chance to connect with its people and traditions. Alexis and Andreas have indeed created a novel lens through which to view Kea, one that I wholeheartedly recommend to anyone seeking an adventure off the beaten path. Kea Food-e-bike Tour
