Exploring Zanzibar’s Hidden Gem: A Day on Prison Island
Drawn by the allure of Zanzibar’s Prison Island, I embarked on a journey to explore its rich history and meet the majestic Aldabra Giant Tortoises. Guided by the ever-enthusiastic Issa, this adventure promised a blend of wildlife, history, and relaxation.
A Journey to Changuu Island
As a wildlife photographer with a penchant for adventure, I found myself drawn to the allure of Zanzibar’s Prison Island, also known as Changuu Island. The island, steeped in history and home to the majestic Aldabra Giant Tortoises, promised an experience that would blend my love for wildlife with a touch of historical intrigue. My guide, Issa, came highly recommended, and his reputation for making solo travelers feel at ease was well-deserved.
The journey to Changuu Island began with a short boat ride from Stone Town. The gentle waves lapping against the wooden motorized boat set the tone for a day of exploration and discovery. As we approached the island, the ruins of the old prison came into view, a stark reminder of the island’s past. Built in 1893 by General Lloyd Mathews, the prison was intended to house criminals from Zanzibar, but it never fulfilled its original purpose. Instead, it became a quarantine station for yellow fever cases.
Issa’s knowledge of the island’s history was impressive. He shared stories of the island’s past with enthusiasm, painting a vivid picture of its transformation over the years. His passion for the island was infectious, and I found myself captivated by the tales of its past inhabitants and the role it played in Zanzibar’s history.
Meeting the Aldabra Giants
The highlight of the tour was undoubtedly the visit to the sanctuary of the Aldabra Giant Tortoises. These gentle giants, brought to Zanzibar as a gift from the Governor of Seychelles in 1919, have thrived on the island for over a century. As a wildlife photographer, I was thrilled to have the opportunity to observe and photograph these magnificent creatures up close.
The tortoises, some of which are over a hundred years old, moved with a slow grace that belied their size. Their ancient eyes seemed to hold the wisdom of the ages, and I felt a deep sense of respect for these living relics of the past. Issa encouraged me to interact with them, and I was able to feed them and even pose for a few photos.
In addition to the tortoises, the island is home to a variety of other wildlife, including peacocks and antelopes. The vibrant colors of the peacocks’ feathers contrasted beautifully with the lush greenery of the island, providing ample opportunities for stunning photographs. The antelopes, though more elusive, added to the island’s charm and diversity.
A Dip in Crystal Clear Waters
After a morning of exploration and wildlife encounters, the crystal-clear waters surrounding Changuu Island beckoned. The beach, with its soft white sand and turquoise waters, was the perfect spot to unwind and reflect on the day’s adventures. Swimming in the warm, inviting sea was a refreshing way to end the tour, and I couldn’t resist the opportunity to snorkel and explore the vibrant marine life beneath the surface.
Issa’s presence throughout the tour was a constant source of comfort and joy. His easygoing nature and infectious enthusiasm made the experience all the more enjoyable. We laughed, danced, and sang our way through the day, creating memories that will last a lifetime.
For those seeking a unique blend of history, wildlife, and relaxation, the Prison Island Tour is an experience not to be missed. Whether you’re a solo traveler or exploring with friends, the island offers a glimpse into Zanzibar’s rich past and a chance to connect with nature in a truly unforgettable setting.
